Ok guys i have searched the forum top to bottom and i can't find the answer, so iam going to ask.

I have a 1955 Fairlane stock all original 272 automatic. Iam putting a 292 out of a 64 truck. I pulled the original one out last night, i have the new one ready to go and i noticed the rear sump on the 292 and the front sump on the 272.

Will the rear sump clear in the car? or do i have to put the front sump pan on it. I didn't pay enough attention to the clearance on the crossmember with the 272 in the car. I don't mind notching the crossmember and boxing it in a little bit, and i really want the rear sump pan in the car. HELP!!!

    -Chris
Ps i know i could have just tried putting it in there but i thought i would just ask first!!

You will need to replace the pan with the front sump, also the dip stick tube will need to be replaced from the 272.

it wont fit, youll need to switch oil pans, the front cover is the same. I've found most of the Y block stuff from 54-64 will all enterchange. You really dont need to run that front mount either.

Thanks a bunch guys, iam also putting a 700r4 in behind it, have the Wilcap adapter on the way now, has anyone else done this in a 55 fairlane?

  8. Not to steal your thread but I have a y block from a mid 50s f100 and the oil pan on it doesnt seem to have a deep sump at all. Looks almost flat.

ya the truck pan really doesn't have much of a sump at all, but it has a rear pickup, vs the car pan has a front pick up....

  10. The front timing cover is different on a truck. as stated you will need to use the car pan ,dipstick &front cover. OldWolf

From what I can remember the bolt pattern is different, and think the water pump is also_Oil pickup is diferent, and the car motor mount maybe needed.

  13. The truck cover has longer bolts and is thicker to accodimate the truck front mount. some truck covers place the water pump in a different location. You dont really need the car front mount. Ive put FE,s in 56,s and didnt use any type of front mount.

Ok i ended up swapping the pan from the 272 to the 292, did not have to change the timing cover!! The cross member could have been notched, but all the steering was right behind that in the way!! Motor and 700r4 are installed with not major issues!!
