I have an oppertunity to pickup a rebuilt 57 292 Ford y Block Short block here locally.

Can you experts fill me in as to how readilly available heads and intakes are and which ones I may want to look at for a nice mild performance setup?

Never dealt with a Y block before but I like the oddball mills and this is a nice setup.

    Thanks

There are alot of parts for these things, espcially up to date technology that you can do to it to make it even more reliable.

    Lots of power....

For me, they are the next best thing next to a flatty :)

Im a Y block fan and have built several over the past few years as demand rises.
Mummert is a good source of parts but pretty pricey. Reds Headers has engine kits as well as headers. The Blue Thunder intake works great but really not worth it under 4K compared to a ECZ 9425-B with minimal port smoothing.

I prefer 3 94's for the looks and use Edelbrock 573 intakes as these match 57 and later head ports. Offy intakes **** for flow.

Several cam grinders still do the Y and Ive just noticed that Lunati lists availability in their catalog but you have to contact them for details.

New dizzies are available using the 289 O ring design wheras OEM production was a push fit between aluminum and iron; made for fun at times to remove. The new design was a Ford replacement item that came out in 65. Currently made by Cardone and sold for around $60 at NAPA and Advance Auto and probably others. Sure beats getting ripped off on E-Pay for an original that probably needs a rebuild!

Mummerts site lists most heads but does miss a few, 57-59 had the big valves and chambers came in several sizes. The ECZ-G is preferred by many but is thin to water and cant take much cutting; plus only the late runs were posted. All 113's are posted and are probably an all around better choice.

The ECZ-C has smaller valves but a near perfect quench. Mate the ports to a later intake and you have stump pulling power well beyond 5K. Since I build mostly truck motors for F100 customers I prefer the C heads.

Any questions just fire away; there are several Y builders on here.
