I just installed the 8BA and Fordomatic that came with my 1951 ford vert. When I went to install the trans crossmember I realized this trans must not be the original because it is longer. I know different Ford products came with different sized cases but I am not sure what this belongs to. The code on the side is 1p 7000 A. It also has a strange bell housing with a 3X7 hole on the driver side that something bolts to. Any help would be appreciated. Looks like I will be making my own mount to make this work.

    Thanks Eric

The hole is probably for the air cooling duct.

I was looking in my little Fordomatic sales brochure and the rectangular hole appears to be the opening for a vent scoop. I would post some pics except I'm not sure how to do that from my iPad.

That opening is for the cooling vent , There was a screen that was bolted over that I guess it kept the critters out. To answer the question, it sounds like an original Fordomatic, first introduced in 1951. To my recollection, ther weren't any air scoops or ducts attatched to it.

Ya. The only place I have seen the scoop is in the cartoony oe sales brochure. It has an early pre 58 style ID tag but the numbers on it threw me off. Maybe it is a Merc or a Lincoln?

I have a Merc-o-matic, and from what I know, a Mercomatic and Fordomatic (and Cruise-o-matic) are the same transmissions. I believe 1951 through 54 Merco/Fordo were the same, considered a small case. In 55 they offered a small or medium case. Also, a 51/52 Merco/Fordo probably has a drain plug, where a 53/54 has a dipstick tube in the same spot into the pan. A small case has a different pan and gasket than a medium case.

These pictures are a 1951 Mercury with a 53/54 Mercomatic. I'm assuming your trans mount should look the same, even if the crossmember is different. I have another Mercomatic, a 51/52 that also has 1P 7000 A cast into it.

I just finished adapting an extra vert cross member I had to fit the length of the tranny. Turns out it is roughly 1.125 longer than stock I checked my motor mounts to make sure the are not backwards and the seem right. The extra length seems to be in either the case or the bell housing. If the tranny was out I would be able to get some accurate measurements. I will probably need to have my drive shaft shortened while I'm at it. I don't mind doing these things as long as they actually need to be done and I am not just screwing up. The previous owner is diseased and he bought the car as a runner and the took it appart 12 years ago. His sons tell me he never did like the tranny it came with but could not tell me if he replaced it.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Interesting how the Mercomatic has a similar side cover on the tail housing as the Lincoln hydramatic does. Wonder if it is there to access a snap ring as the hydramatic has.
