Just saw a story last night on our local News here in Phoenix from the Consumer Help guy about a lady that bought a 2014 ford Focus EV she paid $11K for it six months ago and now the battery died, Ford dealer said cost of replacement would be $14K parts and labor. So much for EV swaps in our 50's Fords.
A EV swap isn't even a consideration for me. I honestly fail to see a upside to it. For me a gas engine is all part of the allure of owning a cl***ic. I can't imagine driving anything and not listening to the rumble of a internal combustion power plant.
As long as there is a constable engine I am not going electric, I know the are clean, extremely fast and environmentally friendly but they just don't have a soul! HRP
I too heard that story on our local radio station out of Portland yesterday. Then they said "here is the rest of the story", they decided to go ahead and buy the new battery rather than junk the car. Called the dealer and said go ahead but now the battery isn't available anymore. The dealer said they would need to find someone that could adapt a different battery but the dealer wouldn't do it, too big of a liability. So that's the story I got.
EVs are kind of a black sheep..... They are really no cleaner than ICE considering the way most electricity is generated here in the US. And we all know the batteries coming from China are not good in any way shape of form..... They can be made to be incredibly fast, like stupid fast..... and that turns some people's cranks. I love the rumble of a big lazy V8, oh and an ICE needs a transmission....so I get 3 pedals! End of story. To each their own as far as EV conversions on theor cl***ics. Just not for me. But out West, they take any old cl***ic and swap in a FWD modern power unit and make it drivable with PS, A/C etc. Not for everyone either, but the cl***ics are not in the junk yard at least!
Senior moment again, fixed the typo Here is the real story. https://www.12news.com/article/news...g942iBkor21wOvXOEf1FmxN1TK_lqO6TLXFHmw9UMZLY4
For EVs to work in our senarios. They need to seat making them common and cheap like and LS swap. Once this happens every SBC or LS swapped car will become an EV. o yeah and the hording of 20 piles of non running projects need to stop- that’s all battery monies. I think Ford will be the one to start this. They already have a part # for the Mach -e motor but still need to sell all the rest of the parts. I’m sure once it get worked out. There will be adapters and harness, etc. It will happen. This the one reason electric power steering sounds nice.
Abe, I worked in the automotive industry for Chrysler (not at a dealer) for 27 years and even if the motors and controllers and ***ociated parts for the install become "common and cheap" I am convinced this won't work in my lifetime. Two reasons why, batteries and power. The current battery technology lacks current density, power stored for a given amount of size and weight. Also a rather unreliable infrastructure on the raw materials from around the world to produce the motors and batteries, already major shortages of raw materials is being forecast. Add to that the problem of power generation and the refusal to go nuclear, removing natural gas power generation (and coal), and relying on wind and solar it just doesn't make sense. Someday a new battery technology may pop up, or even a new fuel technology but we are not there yet. What is being rammed down our throats now is just a grand experiment without any logic of the whole process being thought out cradle to grave and a lot of junk science. The only way I will go electric is if they forcefully remove fossil fuel from America. Sorry for the rant but this is a very sore subject for me but people need to look at the WHOLE picture. Mark
Thanks. I’m with you but don’t want to be left with my pants down at the same time. But very much don’t want to see it happen either.
