There is a B29 at the bottom of Lake Mead. Been there since the 50s, almost completly undamaged & intact. It has been dived on & a few components stripped , had some secret test stuff on board, probably had hard hat divers get that off right after in went in. The US Park Service oversees it now & won't let anyone near it. There was an article & pictures of it in the local paper a few months back .
If the lake gets much lower it may just come out of the water , a couple of towns that the lake drowned when they filled it have surfaced already & the Park Service has conniptions if you even LOOK at them let alone touch anything!

  2. I just went to the UWD site. The locomotives are in 90 ft of water off the coast of New Jersey. They date from 1850-1855. The mysterey stil remains about how they got there.

The 240-250 1929 Nash automobiles are supposed to be aboard the steamer "Senator" which sank in 500 FT.of water off Port Washington WI. The TV show guys talked about diving that site but I don't think they have done it yet.

The railcar carrier "Milwaukee" sank in Lake Michigan in 1927 carrying some box cars.

Since we're going on about interesting water wrecks, there is a P-40E in the bottom of a lake in China. It crashed there during a training flight; it was piloted by a member of the American Volunteer Group (more famously known as the Flying Tigers).

Here is wikipedia's take on the story:

"The wreck of an AVG P-40E is believed to still remain in Lake Dianchi (Lake Kunming). The airplane is believed to be P-40E No. 68, which had 10 kills during its 8 months in China, and was piloted by John Blackburn when it crashed into the lake while on a gunnery training flight on April 28, 1942, killing the pilot. His body was quickly recovered from the aircraft, which was submerged in 20 feet of water, and the P-40E was allowed to remain on the bottom of the lake. In 1997 a joint U.S-Chinese group was formed to located the airplane and possibly raise and restore it. Called the Sino-American Aviation Heritage Foundation, in March 1998 they contacted the China Expedition Association about conducting the recovery operation. Over 300 aircraft are believed to have crashed into Lake Dianchi (including a second AVG P-40E) so locating the aircraft has proven very difficult. In 2003 an aircraft believed to be the P-40E No. 68 was found embedded in 9 feet of bottom silt. An effort was made in September, 2005 to raise the aircraft, but the recovery has continued to be plagued with difficulties and the aircraft remains deep under the lake bottom. Since the aircraft was complete and relatively undamaged when John Blackburn's body was removed from it in April, 1942, it is hoped that the aircraft will be in good condition and capable of being restored, possibly to flying condition."

  7. The way I heard it, it was at an open pit mine in 1932. The mine was not producing enough ore on a per shift basis, so the mine superintendant and 3 or 4 of the mines stockholders showed up at the mine on an afternoon in October, and of course all were driving new 1932 Fords. They all drove their cars down the draw road that was blasted into the walls of the open pit for the dumptrucks to drive up with the ore that was blasted loose from the bottom of the pit. The mine super asked the dynamite man how heavy the charges were that were set for the afternoon blast, and when he found out, he made the dynamite man double charge the holes. When the charges exploded, they opened a passage into an underground lake, and the lake immediately flooded the open pit mine, and everyone drowned except my old uncle Jimmy, who was able to float to safety by holding onto a floating fuel tank. Nothing was ever recovered from the mine floor, but those 1932 Fords are still down there, and if my uncle Jimmy ever sobers up (he's been drunk ever since it happened, nerves you know), he's going to take me to the place (which is now a lake) and I'm going to try some deep scuba diving-----

sounds to good to be true. but you never know. we knew this guy that told us when he started exploring some land he bought (100's of acres in eastern oregon) in the 70's he found a de-railed box car that was abandoned and inside were two dusenbergs-brand new-straight from the factory. the rail road company sent him a certified letter saying that the box car and everything inside was his---they didn't want it!!!
why doesn't any of that kind of shit ever happen to me? oh well.

    Hi Gringo,
I'd be very surprised if someone put '32 Fords in the train car because the wreck happened in 1919. There is more than one train-car in the water too. The first is at around 90ft as you say, but other cars go much deeper. I have not done the dive but have a friend who dove it in June of last year. It is is located in the northern tip of Lake Pend Orelle, just northeast of Sandpoint Idaho (just North of Spokane). It's easy to see how the rummors persist because you can still see the collapsed and twisted rails going down into the lake there to be discovered by each new generation. So anyway... the train is real and it's really down there. I just doubt there are any Fords hidden with it.... but i could always be wrong. Personally I'd rather go to Iceland and dig a P-38 out of a glacier. ;)

who really cares if the stories are real or not? They are always fun to read and hear about. Hell if anything it got a couple of you all rowled up, and I would have to say that, that is worth it too.

That's the thing of it, as romantic of an idea it is, you would be better off finding a dry one. Check out what happened to the "Alvin Clark" after they raised her after 105 years on the bottom..........and the guy went broke doing it.http://www.acbs-bslol.com/Porthole/AlvinClark.htm

That's funny, I heard the boxcar(s) were in Rock Lake, south of Spokane.. and yes, like you say... from the teens, or maybe 20's. Just model T's. My grandfather used to have an airplane, and said on a good day you could see the boxcars from the air, but I guess they are very deep. If I'm not mistaken, most lakes have boxcars with rare cars in them.

  23. Around 1960 the swedish goverment dumped several boatloads of old cars in the baltic sea, ive only seen one pic when they are loading o Skoda convertible, Ford zephyr (english) and a DKW hardtop, but who knows what else they dumped, but they where dumped at the deepest part of the sea, about 1300 feet, probobly just junk now but i would love to see some pics from down there!

    The Norseman story is true!
And in Austria they pulled out an american WWII aircraft last year!
It was a P47. It was a documentary on TV. They were searching the whole "Traunsee" for it! All they knew was that the aircraft was flewn in there.

A buddy of mine found a original '67 Shelby GT 500 KR in a barn about 15 miles from my home, here in Germany!

Never say never! And keep on searchin'!

Have u read about that Chevy Muscle Car find in a recent "HOT ROD"....

  26. Urban legend or not...this is true
a couple of years ago an ad came on ebay in the UK for a Lotus Espri buy now for 50p (thats like 75c) but has to be picked up today. Guy buys it and takes it home with all the paperwork. It did belong to a DJ who had pissed of his wife live on air. He had been interviweing Jodie Marsh (z list "glamor girl") and said he would leave his wife and child for Jodie in an instant. Wife hears him and puts his Lotus on ebay....she was the registered "owner" for tax reasons. Apparently he was "not available for comment" and got fired from the station too (Kerrang in Birmingham)

Also my mate has a Harley 45 under his garage....his dad tried to sell it 30+ years ago and couldn't, couldn't even give it away so bured it under his new garage floor.....big harley shaped stain in the concrete now.

There's also a Navy bomber at bottom of Lake Washington near Renton/Seattle. Buddy of mine tried to secure rights to salvage and dive on it, USN said NFW!!! They still maintain rights to it under military equipment law...

anyway to finish my previous contribution...when I was taking flying lessons in high school, there was an old Ford TriMotor alongside one of the hangars...I climbed in and looked around, but wasn't as much a fan of vintage aircraft then as I am now...of course, neither the field or the plane is still there..

A guy I work with told me a story...

His (now ex) wife just HAD to have one of the new BMW Mini's just after they came out. So off to the dealer they went and ordered one, because the demand at the time outstripped supply. It seems that BMW gives you the capeability of tracking your car's progress as it is being built by going to their website and using the VIN.

They were given a production date and sure enough each time it reached a "checkpoint" somebody scanned the UPC code on the car and it was veiwable by them on the website. It went from production to inspection to shipping. In the shipping stage it went from factory to a port and then loaded on a ship (he had the ship's name) and the day the ship left dock for the USA.

And they waited... and waited... and waited. Finally he calls the dealership and askes them if its normal for a ship to take a month to get across the Atlantic. They checked on it and was told the ship went down in a hurricane and his car was at the bottom of the Atlantic. (I guess they couldn't scan it down there).

So they had to start all over. His wife was a real mouth... this probably started the end of his marriage...

Go buy a 10 Gallon fishtank and drop your matchbox collection in it. Then at least you won't feel totally bad about your imaginary story. You see it really wasn't a lake. It was more like a tank and the cars well they really weren't full scale. Go back to the nut house.
