Beware of the "Bid Game"; If you can, I'd offer her a grand more just to determine what her "bottom line" is on the price. Even if it's a 348, & not an 409 it's a REAL prize to be able to pick up. I hope you can buy it within a comfortable cost range. Sounds like a real nice find! Good Luck!

If I saw this last month I would have stopped the purchase of my house and flown out with $20k in a briefcase.

Does anyone want to move into my extra bedroom for 25K? I have some cool tools and a garage you can use. I'm in lovely central NJ. I know several loose women, I cook, and always have beer in the fridge.

Rustynewyorker, The '34 3w's that were in Rod and Custom belonged to Jake Jacobs of Pete and Jakes fame. He bought all three of those coupes within a 3 week period. One of them had the distinctive '37 truck grille on it that he used for the final build and was the car he made famous as the partner car of the California Kid that Pete Chaporis built and served as their advertising vehicle along with the Kid. It's now at Jerry Slover's shop in Pecular, Missouri along side the Kid. Another was used in a 100% restoration and the third was sold to another California rodder and was rebuilt as a rod by Pete, Jake and a few other friends as a birthday surprise.

Take $25k over there and offer it to her. I would be happy to get it at that price.

  6. Location and education does have something to do with price. I dont know what stuff in your area brings....but it sounds like the little ole lady knows what she has and wants it gone. All things considered, you will be ahead of the game if you get it for 20K. I bump into 'tiques once in a while at 25 to 35k...but they seem ti disappear quickly at that price.

We all hope our fellow H.A.M.B.'r gets to buy this ride but give the guy a break.
He may only have $12,800 to spend.

It could be - any more than that and it might put his family situation in a pinch and that would not be good.

It's easy as heck to tell someone else how to spend their money.

Ya'll starting to sound like polititions, give me 25k of your money and it's easy for me to spend it as well.

I know you guys are rooting for him.
You guys all have big hearts.

    So am I.

The poor boy probably hasn't slept a night or two since.

Good Luck - Hope it works out for you.

Ok, I'm with CCC on this one.... we suck. I've come across deals like this before (original '40 Ford coupe for $4000 is one I can remember) and just didn't have (and couldn't get) the cash to close the deal. And it made me feel even worse when I told friends about it and they told me I should "beg, borrow, or steal the money" and put myself in a bind just to pick up another project. Made me feel like I failed or something. This is supposed to be FUN, right?

We're with 'ya man!! However it turns out!

    This is hard to believe.

I ALMOST did the same mistake once.
Not recognising THE DEAL when having it a few inches from my nose. I woke up in time, though.

Slap your face and wake up.....don't want to bug you, but this makes me sad.

  13. Yeah, like I said! BTW, my wife says 'go for it' on the 5W I heard about. Are you guys going to line up with $15+ cash for it too?

I wish it was as easy as offering her more money. She is selling the thing as a sealed bid. I offered her more when she called to say that I was 2nd in line, and she said that is not fair to the other person, who had a higher original bid. It was really a goofy way of selling the car, and it really kinda pissed me off the way she was doing it, but I guess it is fair if this is truely how she was doing it. It was listed in the paper for $10g, and her daughter was making small talk with me and said they had an offer of $11g already, and that they would make a decision at the end of the day. So I figured I was in the clear with my offer of $12,800. My guess is, that there was someone who looked at the car earlier and told her, what ever your high bid is, I'll top it. Which if so, is pretty shitty, b/c she just wasted my time.

The story behind the car was that it was her brother in laws, and he sold his house back in the 60's and didnt have a garage, so he brought the car to her house and stored it there, paying her monthly storage. The brother in law is still alive, but quit paying her the storage, and wont come get the car. So she decided to sell it. He is the one with the title for it (that is why it was being sold on a bill of sale only)!!! Technically it is not her car to sell. If I could only figure out who the brother in law is... haha

  15. What do you suppose happens when brother in law finds out his car was sold for $13,000+? That's not exactly small change. Apparently he's never been able to afford his own garage to put the car in?

I don't know how it applies on cars, but usually people can't dispose of your property to pay a bill with them. It has the potential to be a messy court case before all is said and done. Might be different if they had it towed by the PD or something like that. I think I would check with a lawyer or find out if this family has consulted one before I stuck my foot in this mess to the tune of that kind of money.

I'd get my ass to the courthouse/library/wherever to run down the bro-in-laws name. I'll bet he has no idea that the car is worth $13K. If you found him, you could go over there and get the car if he has a clear title, its not like he can steal his own car. It would be up to the lady to get the storage lein, and I doubt she has, nor does she have any storage agreement in writing. Its a little underhanded, but its a steel 3-winder!

  17. The other side of your question is how much $$ do you have and which car do you want for that $$....only you can say what something is worth in that case, those are your pockets your diggin into......

The price for that car is way low. Go get that car. Offer to cut her grass for the rest of her life or paint her house if you don't have the extra cake. Think of something to make your offer better!!!! What ever it takes. I'm serious. Offer it to her. Are you calling her???? ...what about now? .......how 'bout now? ....ok now...

A few years ago this kid comes over and says he knows where to get a model A roadster for $400.00. I tell him to go buy it and I will help him put it on the road. 2 days later I see him and he says it was junk, the body lines on the quarters dont line up with the door, and it has the wrong frame. Well I hunted and hunted only to find out it was sold for $300.00 to someone that knew what it was. A real 29 on duece rails with a dropped frontand and set up for a flatty.
Get that thing !!!!!!! Mortgage the house, sell the kids, but get that car!!!!

  20. Exactly. Her selling the car, titled in the brother inlaw's name, is illegal unless she gets the title by putting a lean on the car for storage fees. I bought a Dodge Challenger that way from a body shop. If you can get the VIN number, go and do a title search to find him. Buy the car directly from him, but do it fast! Getting the car from the lady can turn into a real pissing match in the long run... Remember the recent news story about how the guy got his Corvette back 40 years after it was stolen. If he shows up with the title, he can get his car back at any time.

Did you call her yet? ???? ???? ??? What did she say?????

  23. Sure sounds to me that the car is not hers to sell unless the title holder gives her permision.

I would tell her that to stall the sale and do everything you can to find the brother in law. He might not even have a clue she is selling it actually and could cause big problems.

I would hate to see you give the lady the cash and get the car only to have the cops show up and take it back.

    Guess what, your screwed:eek:

In the fall of '84 I found a '33 3w resting behind a barn 15 minutes from where I was living. The owner gave me a long story of how he bought it with the plan of welding the body to an international scout chassis and making himself a hunting buggy. I asked if he'd sell it... he reluctantly said he figured he'd take $500. It was a decent body only with doors and decklid, no garnish moldings that I remember. I figured I'd wait him out and get the price down. In the spring I called him and he remembered me and accepted my $450 offer. Wow what a dealer I was. I loaded the body into my pickup on a Friday and went to a swap meet the next day with the body. Believe it or not I could have bought the frame, fenders, hood and grill at that same swap meet for like a total of $500... but like an idiot I didn't. And like an idiot when a guy there recognized my truck and asked about the coupe body I said, yea I could sell it. He asked how much, and I tried to think of a stupid price to ask, so I said 2 grand. Two guys were out of the building in a shot to the bank and back and had the 3w loaded and gone. I owned it less than 24 hours but I thought I had done well. But in retrospect......

It makes for good reading but any way you shake it there could be a real mess. I ran into a car years ago and the owner needed money on a pretty nice 1968 Z-28. I had a similar Z that the ex talked me into selling and I always regretted it. Thought it was really my day and showed up with my trailer and when I tried to pay him in exchange for the title the place where it was stored gave him a bill right then and there for thousands in storage and I went home with an empty trailer.

If you don't find him you could theoretically lose it when he showed a legitimate claim and if you find him and pay him the relative could give him a storage bill and screw it up more.

Hate to be entertained at your expense and good luck-keep us posted-we all deserve good deals.

    So Roost,
Next time you try to sell a car to a fellow H.A.M.B'r they might think that the car in question you are selling might theoretically not be yours to sell.

Have a buddy call her and say he decided he don't want it. Cut her phone line so nobody can call back. Pay off the rest of the family in C notes to get her to sell it to you. Get a wheelbarrow full of bucks and get on over there. Have your trailer right down the street and get that sucker out of there.
