Well I called her AGAIN tonight, and its a done deal... the car is gone. But it sounds like it might end up as a possible lawsuit. When I talked to her tonight, she said the guy came and picked up the car monday night, and like 2 hours later, the brother in law (who has the title) showed up to pick up his car. Sounds like it could get kinda ugly if the Bro-in-law wants his car back. Technically it wasnt hers to sell in my book. If i was the new owner, I would change my phone number and stash that sucker deep in the garage until I could get a title and some VIN numbers to stamp in to it.

I'll be looking for a nice 3 window street rod at the local car shows in the next couple of years. Probally be painted teal with pink graphics, and a sculptured tweed interior. :(

Several years ago a buddy of mine bought a Duster drag car, all set up with a cage, big block, everything. The guy he bought it from was some what underhanded and sold it with out a title. "Don't need a title with a race car" was his line. I found out the guy that had the title to the duster was looking for it! I called him up and we talked for some time. seems the owner stored the car at the guys place that sold it "for a few months" and when he went to pick it up, the seller told him "some one must of stole it!" I ended up buying the title from the owner for $50 cash. (guess he really wanted the car eh?) Took the title over to my buddy and ask him where my car was? Showed him the title for the Duster. The vin # matched! He was sick! I sold him the title for what I paid for it. I don't think he has ever bought a car without a title again.

Point is, I would probably hunt down the brother with the title and see if I could buy it reasonable. Take the cops with you to pick up your new car. Wouldn't screw around long, the car might already be a bunch of parts all across the country.

You are right... someone outbid me fair and square (i hope). And it is his car to do whatever with. I wont be tracking anyone down or trying to get the law involved. When I said it might be a possible lawsuit, I wasnt refering to myself. I was refering to the owner of the car possibly suing the lady who sold it.
I posted this originally just to get an idea if my bid was fair for the car. I thought it was pretty cheap for a 3 window, but I wasnt sure, and didnt want the bidding to go through the roof if I had to raise my bid. From there it just kinda turned ugly after I found out more. The car was a great foundation, and hopefully the new owner will do it justice. Or store it for another 40 years and have a nice retirement fund. :)

  6. So dude...tell us about the 5window!!!

my comment wasnt directed at you... no, your question was legit.
moreso to the guys who would use underhanded methods to get it...

you will find another one... perhaps with less drama surrounding it.

  9. There's a past together in our classifieds for right now for around 12Gs. No motor etc. too rich for my blood but someone will buy it.

General rule of thumb is nothing is worth more than you are willing to give.

  10. No, sorry, I don't play like that, it was actually something someone in town done that reminded me of the story. Thanks for all the the attention though, makes me feel all warm & fuzzy.

  11. I just learned about it this week. I should know lots more about it (or actually have it) by the end of next week. So far I know it's a LONG time barn stored (really) car with nice stock sheet metal, fairly complete... about an 8 hour drive from Detroit.

I'll post details when it's safe!

    Hey Frank,
One of those coupes was bought only a few blocks from my house in San Gabriel off Del Mar Ave where I grew up. The worst of the 4 was the one that he hacked,(Jakes 34) because he said he only a couple hundred bucks in it, which is the one that I spoke about as did you in the post above & it went for $ wise a whole lot more than what most people know.
Mike Harper owns one of them as Jake wanted to pour concrete in his backyard when he lived here in Temple City for the expansion of his garage,so he sold it to Mike who wanted to build a Flatty powered car originall until Pete talked him into having Boyd do it up all late late model like. (the addition was taken down & given to his buddy Richard B.when he sold the house & moved to Apple Valley the cement stayed and got thrown away by the dozer.) I didn't know what happened to one of the others (I guess that this is one of the ones that you talk about being fully restored?) Jake did keep one though for himself, It was @ his parents house in Hesperia and was as I remember hearing, "The best one" The purple car's hood does survive, hinge wise on Jakes 28 panel truck as he wanted the later style hood hinge set up & he cut it ou of that hood.
Them 34's are worth "all kinds of money," so I guess that's what they're worth;) I'm glad that I have 3 then.:D

Sounds to me like the buyer received "stolen goods" & if that is the case, the holder of the title - If it is a current state of issue document? Is the true owner period. If this vehicle was stored @ the sister-in-laws garage and proper lien sell documents were not filed, mailed, posted & notarized, the buyer & seller may end up doing some jail time as this constitutes Grand Theft Auto in most states. This deal sounded way too good to be true!
When I bought my blue barn fresh 34 3w, I had the cash in my pocket-I beged borrowed & stole for it!;) As soon as the previous owner showed up to the house 5 hrs after our pre-arranged meeting time, I yanked that wad out of my pocket put it in his hand so he could see & feel the green & he went in and got the CA.1949 issued Pink Slip, which I still have to this day!
This car too was stored @ his sisters house which he built in Hesperia & he lived in Compton. This guy was hard to track down, but she wouldn't sell that car w/o him being there to actually close the deal. I couldn't get out of there with the car fast enough. Flat towed it home in the dark nearly 85miles w/o tow lights with a 76 Datsun King Cab & mangled it's (Datsuns) rear bumper by making a turn way too sharp. The wife freaked when she saw it and what I spent so much money on (and to me it was cheap!) Jake chuckled and said to her that he paid $700.00 for one in better shape in 1971.(1 of the 4 coupes that he bought then in a week) Yeah that made her feel all warm & fuzzy when I went in later that night:rolleyes:. That was only the beginning as there was way more tin & even wood to follow:D She thinks the place is a junk yard now:eek:  ;)
Dirty Dan, keep us informed on what's going on with this.
