I found this '64 pontiac lemans/tempest. The guy had started a GTO clone a while back. Its pretty solid, no visible rust on the body, haven't gotten a look under it. If its been in AZ its whole life I wouldn't expect it to be too bad. Its got what I think is a 389 4v backed by a 4 speed. Its a pretty cool car. I'm not so sure about getting a convertible though. The guy wants to sell it but I haven't got a price from him yet. Probably wants too much. What do you guys think?
It looks interesting if the price is right. You might be able to do alittle and sell to fund something you like better.I try to do that to help with my core projects.Goats are pretty in right know.
I've always liked the 64 and 65 cars. One of my best friends in Jersey had a 64, and I still have my 65.
hey cool car most all pontiac blocks had big cast in numbers on the side. and easily tracable stamped numbers so you can figure out what it is,,,good luck
A 326 looks just like a 389, so check out the engine numbers first. There's a date code on the back by the distributor and an engine number on the front of the block by the water pump on the passenger side. Go to the Wallace Racing website and use the decoder there to figure out what it is.
could be really nice...could use a convertible like that here in San Diego...let us know if you pick it up
I'm definitely going to follow up. The owner is out of country...no sure who the person is staying at his house that I spoke to. I'll let you know if I buy it or not.
Good thing I don't have a lot of extra spending money at the moment or I'd be hounding you for info on that car. That is one of the cars on my "short list" to own some day. Clone or not I'd go for it or turn someone who is hunting one onto it.
I had one. Mid sixties GM A body converts are chick magnets. Also a lot of fun to drive. If you get it by all means upgrade the brakes. The 10,567 Pontiac freaks on this board will be happy to guide you regarding performance upgrades.
I was drawn to the GTO when it first came out. Chevy didn't offer anything like it at the time. The Chevelle only had a 327 as top performance option. I always like the '64 the best and it remained unique due to changes the following year. Now I'll get flack for this but if I had it it would get a BBC transplant. Sorry, I like my Chevys both big and small block Frank
I bought one just like that for my wife out of northern CA 2 years ago. GTO Clone convert. Bright red... done very nicely inside and out. 326 auto. I paid $14k then. I would guess this car is worth $8-10k ???? Doug
Get it I so wish I still had mine. In 64 and 65 GTO was a option on Le Mans. Putting all the GTO stuff on is only adding a option. The hood is the $BIG$ one. Mine (85 ish) with 7'' and 4'' rally 2's on, I also ran the stock spiners
I can only tell you that I would want too much too. An early Tempest is on my top 5 list of cars to aquire and hot rod. A drop-top just make my mouth water. If you end up passing on the deal, please PM me the details. Please, please, please, please.
If the price is right, jump on it. I had a 64 LeMans Coupe with the 326, black with a red gut. I don't recall why I sold it, had to be for an an upgrade to something older. Then there was my 66 Tempest Custom, bottom of the line that I built to out run the factory GTOs, Chevelles, etc. Real sleeper.
64 lemans was my first legal at 16 car..2 door drop top...white w/black top/interior, bucket seats...3 speed stick on tree, 250 six...was my aunts car, they bought it new...loved that puppy..smaller then the 65's, cooler imho...was a great tire burner, 3 speed on the tree was striped and i stuck in a floor shifter..spark-o-matic, $29 special..me and my buddy just about needed dental work when we got done and tried to pull it out of the driveway..seems we had fliped the trans tabs upside down,,,1st was reverse, ect..but we never changed it cause of how mean it was to yank it BACKWARDS into second gear!!!died in the tornado that hit cincy in 74...i had parked it waiting to turn 18 to drop the 389 4 speed tripower my uncle (read mom's lil brother) had stashed...i wasn't ALLOWED to install it till i was 18 and moved out of mom's house...guess it had to do with her 2 door 68 convet catalina 400 3 speed stick on the column she had..my step dad had her 68 GTO converted to the catalina due to her riding his ass about going to lawrenceburg speedway for run what ya brung on the weekends...she cried for 3 days over the cat being a Gto..he blamed me as to why he had it changed when she ordered it...he was a dick weed, but maybe i wouldn't have survived the gto..i barely survived the catalina..........but man it'ld roast 1st and 2nd till ya told it to stop!!!!!!!!!!! oh yeah, staying on topic..buy it!!! ya won't regrett it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and ya the hood is for sure big ass money these days.....
Id buy it(if I had the funds), I was looking for a 64 GTO when I bought my 64 2+2(that was stolen).......if you decide to pass on it, put me on the list of intrested buyers.....
I had a '64 GTO back in 1987 that had been a former race car, got it for $1500, sold it for $2000. Helluva college car. Heard it's in Oak Park now.
