I've been cleaning/orginizing my garage and have found I can't throw anything away. More like stuffing my garage with stuff! Anyway I was curious how many of you pick up metal (tubing, sheet, etc.) off the street for use in yet started projects? With metal prices going out the roof I find myself fighting the roaming s**** guys for the stuff. A co-corker asked why I was carrying a 5'x4"x4" piece of square tubing from behind our building the other day I just couldn't explain it to him. Oh well. Does anyone else do this or am I a total freak? -stick
I scored some cool HEAVY angle with lotsa holes from a garage sale the other day. plan on building a jig/dolly to hold my '56 F-100 cab while rust repair is attempted. always scrounging. helps to have a steel fabber for a father in law.
Guilty as charged. I've got stuff i squirreled away 30 years ago. I KNOW I'll need it...........really,
eddie, you are freak regardless of how much junk you have... (on your roof) ;D ...but nothing compares to my "collection"??
Yep, If the metal in question is on public property and obviously s****. I've also been know to ask others if they have any laying around. Never know what you will find or how it will be used. I've gotten a lot of **** this way too.
i have a lil shed thats the size of a chicken coupe....makes a nice lil place to workin on a 4 wheeler or what not! i went out there today and realized i could build a leantoo roof off the front and keep my coupe ther infront and have the lil shed for tools....so i looked around...4 junk pc's, 15 bags of 7 yr old "rock solid now" quick crete and loads of other **** thats, well, ****! so imma throw every non car related items in my wagon and have a big fire! so, yeah, i collect worthless ****!
your normal dude! check into retail metal prices lately ****!. it's called recycling and that is a good thing. i usually snag any 304 stainless because its food grade and i work on food processing equipment.
it's bad. an old bed frame spoke to me and said it was actually a very frustrated tool rack trying to get out. a few hours, lots of cutting, and many bends later. ...it found its new role and now all my garden tools hang nicely off of the floor. shopping carts whisper that they would like to be rolling carts and utility shelves too. and ALL aluminum sheet is just begging to be beaten. so, yes.
Soooooo Mexican of you I do the same thing. I picked up a Pick axe head from the side of the road, am I ever going to do anything with it?, probably not but I couldnt just leave it there.
"Soooooo Mexican of you" Hey, I resemble that remark!!! You wouldn't want that poor little ax head getting run over would you?
My truck is made up partially of "s****" metal..... The floor boards were vandal panels from a Kobelco excavator and part of the frame is made from scissorlift stack arms.... So yeah.....you're not alone....hehe
i would do the same thinking... "it might make a nice little anvil or maybe i could hammerform curves on the pick end" ugh.
Not only do I pick it up off of the side of the road or out of the trash but I troll craiglsist for the free stuff...
All the time, everything and anything. Just can't let it go to waste and if it's no good I throw it on the pile of s****.In my line of work I'm in alot of peoples yards and usally all ya got to do is ask and bam it's in my truck. Later Rob
Our company build VERY large commercial buildings, I find myself dumpster diving on a regular basis. My wife hates me sometimes. Last weeken I build out an old metal shelving unit it was bent up a bit but I straightened it, today I picked up 2"x2"X5' square tube today. I have no clue what I wil;l use it for as the wall is .25" thick but I am sure I will come up with something. That will go with the rest of my stash!
Absolutely. Some of the best square and round tubing can be found on exercise equipment that ends up on the side of the road with a 'free' sign on it. I cut it up, stack it up, and throw the **** parts away. Let's see.... zero money down, zero per month. Yup, that's for me! Pete
i know how to be creative and build stuff but unless i have a pile to look thru ?????.. seems the ideas in my head can be altered if i find just the right piece of saved junk metal....the MCGYVER SYNDROME I GUESS latlely the trouble is having two pilesostuff... one here and the other at the our cabin. 60 MILES AWAY... now trying to remember where the piece i want is locatated makes me loco... we are currently gathering a load of s**** metal to be turned in for real money ...old stoves , tin ,alts and starters, broke metal ????cast sinks etc i have taken some items back out for use already... seems the more i handle it the more possibilities the **** has.. i actually intend to not take the s**** to the dealer myself as i would come home with more and 0 $ .... i need room more than anything these days and i am working on large item storage.. i found 10 ..8' long by 14' high sections of pallet racking each with 4 shelves in the dumpster last spring and had to go buy the keys/clips at 3 bucks apiece ...damn that was a expensive free storage .. while sorting/shelving i came up with 25 aluminum 5 spoke mag wheels ....someone suggested s****ping them and asked them to walk away before i said something or do i'd regret
I have a big pile of 3/4" tubing that came from a seed rack that the local Lowes was getting rig of. Yea, it's a disease.
The steel company who we go through lets me rummage through their s**** bin if I ask nicely (and our bill's paid up! ). It's absolute heaven...and you wouldn't believe some of the pieces that are considered "s****".
Yeah, I'm a scavenger, too. Little s****s of 4130 tubing, sheet aluminum, Lycoming valve covers, rockers and pistons... and about 100 3' square steel shelves - all courtesy of helping clean out a hangar. And remember to troll behind the car stereo shop nightly; you wouldn't believe how much 8ga, 4ga, and even bigger that they throw out. -bill
I've got boxes of s****s...you never know what just might work for a bracket or something random you need to fix. And,,,, I hate to admit it, but I scrounge on our put-yer-****-on-the-sidewalk days out here. I guess I'm a hypocrite 'cause I get pissed at the other people doing it, but they're usually tweakers out at all hours and at least I'm not looking for clothes and silverware! Bryan
"And,,,, I hate to admit it, but I scrounge on our put-yer-****-on-the-sidewalk days out here." Hahahahahaaa.... If my neighbors ever came over to my pad they would see all the "junk" I've pulled out of their trash!! Hahahaaa. -stick
Nothin' beats finding a use for a piece of s**** metal you've had kicking around for 30 years or so.........well, ALMOST nothin' beats it
Most of the brackets and other ***orted items on my hot rod are courtesy of my landlord although he doesn't know it! He's 85+ and I know he'll never use it or even miss it! Anytime I bring something home my wife says "So where are you going to put that?" and just shakes her head and goes in the house. When they have the set your junk out days here in Sack of tomato I look for usable stuff especially metal! One man's junk is another man's treasure!
"Most of the brackets and other ***orted items on my hot rod are courtesy of my landlord although he doesn't know it! He's 85+ and I know he'll never use it or even miss it!" Maybe, if ya asked him nice, think he just might GIVE it to you??
****, my bro made the framing for his custom quarters on his 53 kaiser outa pieces of old gates, flower pot stands, and even a kamode!!!
