I've come across a guy that inherited a ton of great old parts- parts from just about everything 30's thru 60's. The guy doesn't know much about old cars and is slowly hauling the stuff to the scrap yard cause he needs the money. I'm trying to save as much as I can within my means. I offered to advertise but he doesn't want to hassle with selling the parts. He has a lot of flathead heads, intakes, blocks and even NOS/NORS parts among a lot of other stuff. I'm still trying to learn all I can about the flattie so my question is: is there a "preferred" block, head, intake etc casting # or style? I can't afford to get them all so I wanted to try and save the best and most popular parts. No aluminum parts other than one oe intake that has a crack on the bottom side. Any pics or links are really appreciated! Help me save some good parts!

  2. stop the maddness?.....he's getting maybe $100 a haul - a couble of blocks and heads - tell him just stop and let us add it up it up - some of us have cash and trailers to just load it up....I'll bring donuts too!

School up on flathead blocks. The blocks that are rebuildable have a value. Cast heads, intake and exhaust are not worth much other than scrap. Merc 4" crankshafts are worth 2 to 3 hundred. Timing gear covers and crab style distributors are good to keep. Bellhousings for 8BA blocks are usable. Some of the new oil pumps are crap so save the good ones. Used pistons are not worth much but the rods are. Each motor needs an oil pan so I guess they have value.

How is that for a start?

  4. save the 59ab blocks first. 59 bloccks have a built in bellhousing while 8bas have a seperate bellhousing adapter. At first glance thats a way you can tell the blocks apart. SAVE AS MANY PARTS AS POSSIBLE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are probably enough HAMBers in Texas to take all the good parts off the old boy's hands in a day. I have a trailer and a truck. Since stillrunners has breakfast covered I'll bring lunch, LOL.

  6. I'd buy pretty much everything flathead related at scrap prices. FOR SERIOUS.

I can't stand seeing great usable parts scraped! I told him he'd probably make more selling the parts over scraping anyway. He's got a lot of great stuff! I'll do all I can to save as much as I can but I'll try and get him to let some other guys over there.

  8. Count me in,I've got a truck and trailer. Where in texas are ya'll? If he is offered a fair price maybe a win/win.

Put it on a trailer and take it to the New Braunfels Swap Meet in a couple of weeks. Better see if you can get a space now as it fills up. Then, when it really gets warm, drag the leftovers to the Fredericksburg Swap Meet, probably in July. (Don't throw out cast iron EAB heads, some guys like those.) Let me know if you come across any V-8 60 stuff. In return, I have a pressure tester for the blocks that we can work out a deal on for rental. I'm near Helotes.

Pay him scrap plus 10% and tell him you'll take everything. He gets 10% more than he was AND he doesn't have to load, haul and gas up.
At the very worse, you'd lose 10% on an unusable part (wasted block for example) if you had to scrap it.
If the guy has any decent parts and is selling it for pure scrap...he's an idiot, plain and simple. This is like the guys who crush $1000 cars for quick $200 scrap.

May end up workin out some deal where I can sell for him for a little kickback and make everyone happy! I may have a very helpful fellow hamber id the harder to figure out parts.

  12. Yeah, just pay him scrap plus 10% plus a case of his beer of choice. Then YOU go and make the profit off it selling it to people and put that money into your car.

Otherwise he's just going to scrap the stuff out of sheer laziness and no one gets anything. If you get it all it's the same difference to him and then you get control of where it goes.
