Projects Found this sweet little 1/4 midget chassis in Oakland today... build it?

Love that body, we should probably marry them up! Took it down to the bare chassis today and working on purchasing a Continental engine for it. I'll post pics soon!

I have seen a lot of 1/4 midgets in my lifetime, and none with a frame anything like that one. With 3 small dia. tubes as the front section, it would have been a real flexi flyer. I believe it is a home built frame with a store bought front axle, spring, and radius rods. The tail would have had to be huge to fit over that massive rear tube. It just has too many crude areas to be a production frame.

 

I'm starting to think you might be right the more I look at this chassis and all of the helpful posts from HAMB members...

 

The front beam appears to be a Race-Craft piece.

 

I don't think it was ever raced. I think someone built it for his kid, or kids, to play with. May never had a body. The axle gear is way off for a 1/4 midget engine. I agree, the front end looks like Racecraft.

 

Put 2 Chainsaw 2 cycles on it and you'll be going 70 MPH, Hold on tight. JW

 

I had a Continental engine I bought from a 1/4 midget guy on my homemade minibike and it was the fastest mini bike in town faster than one with a Mac chainsaw engine. It was so fast it would sometimes scare the crap out of me LOL.

Made one mistake riding it while I had the flywheel cover off while "tuning it" a dog started chasing me and when I pulled my foot away from it my heel hit the turning flywheel with all those fins like a buzzsaw and I STILL have the scars about 60 years later.

 

loudbang, I flipped a cart with 2 McCullough chainsaw engines on it going about 70MPH in a school parking lot, landed elbow first, it's still all chipped up. Wouldn't change a thing. Lets talk Oakland Hobby Shop into putting his Qtr Midget together, he'll flip it too, all part of the fun. Damn my elbow hurts this morning. HAHAHahahah!

 

So that's where Kent Fuller got the idea for the single bisquit front, for his Dragsters.

 

Sort of like Ken Crawford's Cart.

 

When cart racing was first getting started, there was a 15 ci (250cc) limit on engines and that was the only restriction so we put a 250cc Yamaha road race engine in one, complete with 6 speed gearbox. Not even the outboard engine carts could keep up with that. It didn't take long for the rules committee to outlaw functioning gear boxes.

 

I worked for Volks Cart for a couple of summers, we built McCullagh and Homelight 2 cycles, squared and shifted ports, stuffer plates, racing carburators and very little/just enough oil in the gas. very fast for 1958/59.

 

I still have a Clinton 2-1/2 hp Panther.

There is a 1/4 midget association & track in Livermore, CA. The track is located North of I-580 at the intersection of Northfront & Laughlin Rd. It's visible on a Google search.
