I recognise that car from this month's issue of Ol' Skool Rodz. It's the Smaldino & Yates car, built by Vic Smaldino and Bob Yates in southern California. According to the article I have in front of me it holds the record speed in the 1/4 mile for a four cylinder dragster after recording a speed of 136.15mph on October 29th 1961 in San Gabriel Drag Strip. A record that, apparently, still stands 55 years later.

Would you believe it runs a 1932 Ford Model B block (214ci), with a Fargo head (4 intake, 4 exhaust, crossflow) on Nitromethane and is direct-drive through a slipper clutch - neutral or all out!

The twin engined Mancillas car was never on a strip. Al & Eddie got it running, took it down into the L.A. river, did a wheelstand and broke the frame. Eddie Jr. has it now and plans to put a new frame under it. His roadster, turbo flathead B engine, ran 11.96 at the Antique Nationals this year! F.A.S.T. did an article awhile back featuring banger dragsters. www.hotforhotfours.com
