Holy cow. That is an impressive group of cars ***embled right there.

The "Bad News" car is actually the one that REALLY got me all silly and sideways for the Willys body style, and more importantly, got me interested and digging into the history.I remember the article in Rod n Custom like it was yesterday. This car should be given as an example in one of those "How to build a period correct G***er" threads....!

Rooman: I think the tank/float idea is going to be used in my project as well....I saw it mentioned in the Hot Rod article that someone posted a link to a while back.

Its tricky but not super complicated to make the "hilborn" style work. I would suggest buying a "dial-a-jet" Gatlin gun style pill selector you can mount wherever and can change pill without opening anything. If you are running a pyro, I would mount the dial-a-jet in the dash somewhere so you can change while driving.

    Hey, Scott;

Any chance of you doing a how-to? & p***ing on info you've found from others? While I won't be running one of these, I do like seeing difficult problems solved. Not to mention different ways of getting the job done. 'Tis always fun to dream...

FWIW, IIRC: Pete Jackson was street running a mech FI years ago. Just stacks, no blower. There was an article in Hot Rod Yearbook, don't remember the year, but it was called "Pete's Street runner" (might have been in a street freaks section) or something like that. He used a small surge tank in between the fuel tank & the fuel pump. Pressurized it with air (by mouth) for starts, but mentioned that a small air pump was coming to make life easier.

    Hey Marcus,
    I will definitely consider
Doing a how-to,but in the interest of not leading folks down the wrong path and having guys spend their time and hard-earned cash on stuff that doesn't function as they had hoped,I would like to get the entire setup ***embled and running, and work out as many bugs as possible before I post anything on here.
I will take plenty of pictures during the buildup, and will keep a detailed record of all parts used, jet sizes, etc, and any relevant information.
I just want to wait til it has proven itself before I start posting anything.
Also, there may be a few proprietary tricks that I may not be able to post due to an agreement I made with a wily old Fueller pilot who has been nice enough to provide a ton of guidance and information to this project, all out of the kindness of his heart, and a willingness to help a fellow Hot Rodder who was in over his head on a project.

    Stay Tuned!

    It's gonna get good...!

Here is one of the cars which make a VERY STRONG case for being able to drive a mechanically injected car on the street. Four port Hilborn on a blown BBC owned and driven (for many years) by Dennis "the Menace" Johnston - Lake Havasu, AZ. Did I say driven, it is. I think Dennis uses a momentary switch-primer system on initial fire-up. There is an interview video link that tells it in his own words, if I could find it. I believe it is somewhere in the 37-42 Willys thread.

That Dennis the Menace car makes me want to sell everything I own, live in a tarpaper shack, and spend every penny I have on building an incredibly violent Willys...lol

That is some great information right there...!I had heard about the Pete Jackson Falcon, but didn't realize it was a Ranchero, and didn't realize it was running A SBC.....
My major concern at this point is not loading it up popping the blower right off it if it backfires.I think we will have that covered though....As long as the byp*** is set up with the right pill and the relief valve opens correctly, things should be good.
    I hope.

In the mean time I need to dig into this and get it cleaned up and rebuilt:

There was a seller on EBay recently (cant find it now of course) selling an EFI unit that sat in the hat and was shaped a bit like a pistol.

I recall it was for an Enderle setup but it would fit in a Hilborn hat. Hilborn also sell a flashy air cleaner for their 4 port setup so the "gun" wouldnt be seen when you looked down the hat. Its an oval so fits in the hat so isnt stuck out front looking like a prolapsed bowel.

So there is something out there that will both work, and not look goofy like the EFI Hilborn setups.

    Hi Todd,
That's the one that sandwiches in between the Bugcatcher style hat and the blower.I know in the ad it says Hilborn, but it's for the later Enderle style hat.

I always loved those Enderle units and their cool looking ****erflies, but that look is just a touch too new for the car I'm building. Its a shame, because that setup would really work well I bet...

Look around that website. They have a pikky of it with an early Hilborn (the ugly one with the 4 holes out front like the Enderle) so I reckon the ugly hat could be replaced with the cool Hilborn scoop.

I have a Hilborn EFI setup and the 4 injectors into one side look ugly and unbalanced. Im hoping to hide all but the scoop under the hood

    Hey, Scott;

Thanks. & maybe ole wily x-Fueler could be convinced to come clean? Esp for world-wide recognition on the HAMB? :D . I'm looking forward to seeing what you do, don't do, & why.

    Simon: thanks for posting that.

He's a great guy,but there are a few controversial tricks he likes to use that go against conventional thinking.
He has tested and proven these items on his own car,and is just totally NOT interested in engaging in an online debate with somebody who "knows why it won't work", yet has never built one.
I don't blame him,so Im going to honor my promise, and see how this works out.

I'm shure some one could whip some thing up similar that would fit in the scoop on top of your 4 port it might only have 4 injectors but its a shot

  26. I am currently running a Hilborn 4 port set up on a blown Hemi and just LOVE it! Also run Enderles on a blown fueler.
The Hilborns are just wonderful and the part throttle is fine. My set up is in a boat but, I can cruise at part throttle and putz around just like anyone with a carb or 2.
There is a simple priming system with an elec pump 't'd into the inlet line for priming and there is a switch on my dash to do so. You only need to prime when the engine is cold.
Occasionally, I have accidentally flooded the engine a bit by holding the throttle open. The best way to cure that is to install a shut off. With the fuel shut off, you can hold the throttle wide open as you crank the motor to clear it out. Then, when it fires, open up the shut off.
It is not as plain and dry as something your mother can drive but, I do not think most of us are looking for that. I am so happy with this blower/injecter set up, I plan to install it on a street/strip altered wheelbase funny car I am building to try it on the street. Based on my exp lake testing, I am confident it will work just fine. It really works just fine at cruising/part throttle and nothing looks better IMO. Throttle response is crisp and it is VERY exciting to drive.

Good luck and let us know how you make out. Here are a few pics of my '62 M/T HEMI Pontiac.

No bandaids, nothing modern on this 1962 Hilborn set up and it works wonderfully after 51 years and will continue to do so!

    If that isn't a strong endor*****t I don't know what is.
A boat would probably be just about the toughest test of part throttle driveablility that you could imagine.
By the way, those Pontiacs of yours are
    really something!

This is what I did, I made a bracket to hold the electronic injectors. Then I plumbed the inside with #3an bulkhead fittings. I use 4 injectors batch fire and just double the size
