I used Fram for years with no problem but my '64 Fairlane, my daughter's '61 Plymouth and my '80 Datsun 510 all use a PH8A filter and when I wanted to upgrade to a longer truck filter I could never figure out what the bigger size was in a Fram.

A little internet research showed me that a PH8A = WIX 51515 and that a Wix 51773 has the same threads as those two but it is about 6.4 inches longer than both. It lets you add dang near a quart of oil to your engine. I can't use it on the Ford though because of frame clearance. I do now run a Wix 51515 on the Ford's 260 V8 though and the Wix filter always seems heavier than the Fram did even though the change interval is the same. The extra weight does suggest some validity to what the most common worry about a Wix is: over-filtration. That possibly could be a problem if you left a Wix on way past the interval but I don't so I ain't worried about it ~ sux to be a lazy filter slob ;).

I use System 1 filters on my Hot Rods and Wix on my Duramax and daily drivers. Grice would shit a brick if I brought an engine in with a Fram filter on it.

I personally have not had problems with Fram, but know first hand of racers that have. I use Wix on the race engines and my regular stuff too. Too much to risk.

Fram really are junk. I believe Wix is the best, however I also use Motorcraft...

My Dad had a '68 GTO back in the day. The Fram filter blew the side out on the highway.....Lost oil pressure..... Lost engine...... Very unhappy..... Fram said tough luck!
We have not used Fram since. Now use Purolator Pure One
