Fram, Wix, or AC Oil filter?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by atomickustom, Mar 10, 2006.

  1. Ok so this thread is not even about air filters and is four years old. How much does Fram pay you?

and I quote "Wix branded, Carquest Blue, and NAPA Gold are all the same filter. Part numbers are even similar. A Wix oil filter for Ford is 51515, Carquest Blue is 85515, and NAPA Gold is 1515. The NAPA silver and Carquest Red are secondary lines designed for low price customers. The difference between the premium (Wix branded, Carquest Blue, and NAPA Gold) and the secondary line (Carquest Red and NAPA silver) are interior differences; fewer pleats of the filter media, gasket material is different, by-pass design and material is different. The same applies to the air filters. Although there are some numbers in the secondary air filter line that are exactly the same as the premium line, only the part and price is different."

    Wix/Napa Gold

The *AC* in AC Delco is Albert Champion, founder of Champion spark plugs etc...So he actually founded two spark plug companies.

Fram is abundant at wallyworld, I wonder if their business practices have anything to do with Fram's new-found crappiness? I use Wix & Purolator.

  7. Wix, for sure. Baldwins are supposed to be really good, but the only way I've found to buy them is on line. Anyone know how they compare to Wix?

  8. Made by Wix. (Not that it's a bad thing. :)) Dunno what, if anything, is different between them and an equivalent performance Wix.

61TBird, Thank you for digging up my old post on the fram filter failure issue. When I first saw this posting, I was gonna do it myself, but I'm very glad you did it for me.

BTW, the 318 in the dakota I spoke of in that post locked up a few weeks back. It never did quite recover from it's bad experience with that Fram filter, so I'v gotta pull it and rebuild, or replace it sometime within the next few weeks.

Fair warning to ALL!!! Avoid Fram filters like the plague!!!!!!

Sorry for the excessively large, bold, red type... But this issue is one I feel very strongly about!

I've never used fram on any of my cars.. Back in my chevy dayz, I always used the AC PF-35 filter on both the bbc and sbc. Now that I'm drivin' Ferds, I'm usin' Motorcraft filters..

  13. Can you tell us what he difference is between the PF1218 and the PF1218CL ?

Agreed, I've been using Wix for a while now. Was using the higher end purolator for several years until they changed the finish from the cool looking metalic blue paint casing to the now used rough-sandy-grit finish. I just didn't like the idea of any of that grit getting into the filter. Plus the blue looked cooler anyway

The PF1218 is shorter than the original PF35 and has a flatter mounting plate. The PF1218CL is the same length as the original PF35 and has a thicker mounting plate than the PF1218.

Don't forget about the Wix race filters. They are supposed to be even tougher. The numbers have an R after it. For example:51515R is the Race 51515 for Fords.

We have this cut out in our store. The wix filters are better constructed internally and with more filtering layers. All of Car Quest filters are wix brand filters. K&N also offers and extremely good filter as well as MOROSO...both can be purchased thru Jegs or Summit

And it's not just Fram oil filters,I had a Fram fuel filter ahead of my new Red Pump and it plugged up the pump and fried it in less than 2 hours run time so if Fram is on the box I refuse to buy it!We all want to "buy American" but with so many companies tossing quality for profit you wonder who you can trust anymore.

WIX is overall the best, don"t believe everything you read,ac is owned by general motors, sure they are going to down their competitors product, and just think about how many people believe crap like that.If you got the price magazines will put anything into print.

  25. Wix = NAPA Gold.

I wouldn't let a Fram come anywhere near one of my cars whether air or oil or fuel filter.

I just had an "o' shit" moment after seeing the filter review on page 1. I have used Fram filters and think one of the cars has one on it now. I have used all the not recommended filters at some point.

Fram used to be good till they started selling them at discount stores, Quality vs price... Price isnt everything. They also had a problem a few years back with tiawan counterfitters. Wix makes a high quality filter in the USA!

I don't even know if anyone else outside of Wix offers a cartridge filter for my car so the choice is easy.
