Just wondering what people have used to do a frame coating after sandblasting? I have seen threads on POR 15, Rust Oleum, and others. Is there a better one or one to avoid? The frame is for a 1958 Ford Custom300 4 Door.
Unless building a show car, plain old Rust Oleum oil based enamel is hard to beat. Either apply with a brush, or cut it and spray. Any later frame work can be touched up easily.
I used truck bed liner spray paint.. but it quickly became apparent that it catches all kinds of dirt and so then I put another coat of high gloss black spray paint... Still looks pretty good after 5 years
If its not a show car, I'd vist the tractor supply store and get some implement paint. You can spray it or brush it or both. Lot cheaper than automotive paint but color choice is limited. Black is available. Works fine on suspension parts too.
At one time it was Ditzler (PPG) DP90 after sandblasting, at least that is what was used when my Nova body was sandblasted in the late 80's. I see a suggestion about #1791 first then DP90 but I'm no painter. Here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/need-some-ppg-dp90lf-advice.494343/
One my PU I blasted the frame, cleaned and applied DTM primer, then a skim coat of bondo to fill pits and irregularities, followed by catalyzed semi flat black paint. Looks brand new...make that better than new. It looks proper.
POR 15 doesn't stick to sandblasted metal worth a darn., at least for me it hasn't. Put me with the Rustoleum or farm implement paint, brushed or sprayed. No need to prime it, but give it 2 coats of paint with the proper time between.
