    Hello Folks,

My 47 Plymouth has power brakes, and the master cylinder and power brake booster are mounted to the frame, under the driver side floorboard, in close proximity to the left exhaust pipe. The current booster is a 7" unit, and there is a little over 1" of clearance with the pipe. I want to upgrade to an 8" booster, but this will reduce the clearance to 1/2" or less. How much clearance is necessary

I've always thought that so long as it isn't touching the pipe it should be OK.

    Thanks in advance.

On my 40 I had about 1/2 inch of clearance from the pipe to the booster so I wrapped the pipe with a double layer of exhaust wrap. You could also make a heat shield.

Much less than about an inch of clearance is pushing your luck somewhat I'd say. But thermal wrap on the exhaust in that area would help. Or you could move the exhaust some? And if you're changing the booster size to get more assistance I'd suggest you step up to an 8" double to begin to really make a difference.

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely upgrading to an 8" dual-diaphragm unit.

  5. Eventually the heat still shorten the life of the booster internals. Can you do without a booster? Does your 7 year old sister or 95 year old grandmother drive the car?

Wrap exhaust pipe and make a heat shield to avoid problems
