Glad it was just on the two holes. Dodged a bullet there.

Yes indeed I'm still laughing about it ain't the end of the world for Freddie like it was before I started the project and I'll have to say Matt I successfully kept to my rules of no heat . Question I got for you Mart is , " Would you try my process on your next build ? "
Hahaha I'm going back to Nate's for a 7/16 " - 14 coated 4 fluted Carbon plug tap for Flo . Mind you I do have my Flux Core unit on the bench running .035 " wire . FCAW is negative electrode DCEN so less heat goes into the block than a Mig unit that runs DCEP so its back to Flo today remove the broken extractor

  4. Yeah Mart,,,,,that was the reason I was asking about Aldo .
I saw where Freddy had already cut the threads with the fine thread tap .
I was hoping Aldo was a lot sharper on his machine tolerance,,,,and ***embly skills .
Oh well,,,,,,it can be fixed .

You’ll need to explain this to me;)
Are you saying there is less HAZ with flux core than gas?

You have penetration of a weld and also energy to consider and where the energy is going to go .
Most MIG is DCEP - Direct Current Electrode Positive and has many used so is popular for building just about any structural and alot of manufacture . So its utilized often and for shop owners its simplified and looks prettier than FCAW which makes for a happier customer .
Flux Core Arc Welding is same energy at the arc but it is a DCEN - Direct Current Electrode Negative considered by some a Reverse Polarity so the energy doesn't disperse deep into the metal it stays hotter and more concentrated towards the weld puddle . So yes less heat penetration but seems hotter because its energy is not dispersed into the metal .
I can go on I'm a pro and teacher with FCAW . Ha I use .072 " wire with 440v I call it My Dragon . That's for Structural that's another ballpark but for the shop I got this little unit from HF its cool spits out real hard welds and flat beads that are a bear to grind out . I love it
Below is another nice little helper I've saved paint jobs with this paste , great stuff .

Aldo is not the engine builder just another customer at Nate's and matter of fact just got back from Nate's Machine Supply and picked up these for the crystalized bolt shank . These are for real best quality and tech money can buy .

The actual HAZ is only the weld area not anything outside the actual weld . Many see a discoloration outside the actual weld area and construe it as HAZ damage and that's not the case . Inspectors are concerned with the weldments HAZ .
My knowledge comes from AWA D1.1 that is the Structural Codebook if there is a codebook for Cast Iron with different definition its not to my knowledge . I'm sure somewhere there is AWS code for brazing cast but I just know if your repairing cast you preheat it to 742 F then repair then give it a real long post repair cool down period .
Crystalization is a real metal cancer .

    Hi Everyone ,
Hope all are well and in better form than Freddie is .
Yes the inspection is done and for starters **** at Engine Machine Services informs me that Freddie is still rusty throughout the cavity and areas that matter . Anything cast is a sponge so I imagine its really deep with rust so next is the necessity of 4 sleeves , 4 seats , a deck job and a full scouring and only two head bolt thread inserts then we all know the rest for an excellent block prepping we are talking $2175 just to prep the block for ***embly and yes it will have a notch at that bottom cylinder still . **** will not sacrifice his tooling on weld fillment even with nodular rod by Lincoln but I will inform him of Lincoln's machinable nodular rod they have available when I pick up Freddie next week . I'm not out to change his mind and if you recall after that second month of dis***embly of Freddie O knew the chances of rust damage was severe so I purchased Flo . I did show Freddie's connecting rods to **** after I cleaned and polished them and Dock showed me why he is rejecting them is is due to the rust still impregnated deep in the rods and this as we know rust cavity's are cracks and cracks means necessary ductility is out the window .
So going to pick up Freddie next week and put him under the bench and roll Flo out for dis***embly

    Hi Everyone
It's good to be back getting in the groove again without detail let me just say life got in the way for a minute after going to the wrong job site but am ok now and hope all of you are also ok and staying well and your families also .
I put Freddie's crank on the bench earlier a month ago now and now today have done some minor cleaning enough so journals will hold oil while I store the crank so quite frankly I mummified the crank today just like I have all the other pieces of Freddie last month .
So I cleaned out all but one of the journal oil cavity's in the throws loaded them with oil then slathered the10_30 over complete crank and am now wrapping it all up and protecting the snout yes the pulley bolt is screwed into the crank snout and protected the snout as you can see in the picture . **** did say Freddie's good parts are special since Freddie never saw a machine shop till now and Alan has a couple Merc cranks I need to inspect and choose one so this special crankshaft is getting the love and attention 8t deserves and getting wrapped up oily and tidy .
That's Flo in the back we going to dis***emble the rest and get it over to **** and Freddie has become a part of **** and Bills shop for now haha waiting for his gal Flo to come to the party ! , Everyone do have a good day and keep your foot in it !
