I've been contacted by fellow HAMBer "Scootersnpie" who wishes to make a donation to the HAMB in honor of his good friend Ernie Hashim.

The donation will come in the form of three Alliance Memberships. The recipients will be picked from your nominations.

The ideal candidate will be a HAMBer (other than yourself) whom you believe to be an examplary member of the hot rod community. Someone who is not already an Alliance Member, but could sure benefit from it.

Make your nominations here. The lucky recipients will be announced next Sunday. Maybe you feel strange about nominating someone? PM me your nomination and it'll stay between us.

Ernie was the proud owner of Hashim's Automotive, which he opened in Bakersfield, California in 1953. Hashim's Automotive, at 701 Baker Street, was the annual gathering place for luminaries such as Don Garlits, Chris Karamesines, and Connie Kalitta. Hashim earned a reputation as an unselfish individual who became a friend to everyone he met during a career that spanned more than six decades.

A successful racer in circle-track, Salt Flats, and Top Fuel, Hashim is also known as the Godfather of the Blown Chrysler Hemi as he helped develop one of the first front-mounted supercharger configurations for his dragster. This dragster broke the 150-mph barrier in Bakersfield in 1955. In 1958, the Hashim, Hylton & Crossley Top Fuel entry broke the 170-mph barrier with a 170.45-mph run in Bakersfield.

Racers who drove for Hashim include Jack Williams, Tony Waters, and Wayne King. After retiring as an active owner in 1963, Hashim worked with many Top Fuel campaigners, including Garlits, Tom McEwen, and Don Prudhomme, and the Warren-Coburn-Miller operation for research and development on the newest M&H Tire designs.

Hashim is also well known for setting records at El Mirage, Muroc, and the Bonneville Salt Flats. His claim to fame was stomping Gartlis when he came to Bakersfield in 1956.

Ernie Hashim died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 after a lengthy illness. He was 79.

I'm going to nominate (2) from Southern Kanada that I know are hard working hamb members busting a nut to make it all roll...

    1- Bcarlson
    2- Joeycarpunk

there are alot of blue colar hard working hambers that deserve this that might otherwise have the extra scratch to splurge on a membership... and I think its an awesome gesture... Thank you to the soul responsible for making these memberships available.

I would like to nominate Norm Ahlgrim. Here is a little history. Norm has a 1931 ford coupe chopped, chanelled, and running a flathead. He bought this car in 1957 for $50.00. He still has the car today. Imagine holding on to a car for 50 years. The car has not changed much since I first saw it in the early 80's. With the exception of the car being in primer now, the car was a royal blue color. This is a guy is a real hot rodder who despite all the trends that have come and gone kept his car true to the tradtional style we all love. I grew up with Norm's son Trey and I remember seeing the car and drooling over it. The car for some reason burnt it's self into my brain. As I started my life I moved away, but eventually moved back. One night at a local cruise in 2003 I saw the car again with Norm behind the wheel. It brought back all my memories of that car and growing up. I now own a 1930 ford coupe which I will never sell!!! It is all because of Norm and his coupe.I am sure we all have story's like this, but this is mine.

Jalopy Joker gets my nomination. He's a really nice fellow. We did a trade deal on our cars and when I got there my lack of tools came up in the conversation and he started loading stuff in my truck. a Nice floorjack and a set of jack stands. A shop light. a small toolbox with various odd tools. I felt akward taking them and asked if he was sure he wanted to do that. He said yes that they were spare tools. I was amazed by his kindness not something you run into everyday. He also has been dealing with serious health issues and I think he deserves it..Hopefully he dont mind me nominating him..

  7. ditto....I think she's consitently contributing to the spreading of the HAMB gospel in so many ways, over a large period of time.

Similarly, but in other ways, I've been blessed to 'meet' a gentleman who has a p***ion and goodwill like no other.....'Ahotrod', he has contributed to the HAMB in so many ways, and feel honoured to call him a 'mate', even if he lives on the complete other side of the world.

    Cheers,

I want to nominate a fella in my community.

His HAMB name is LONE WOLF. He's a great guy. Got a bunch of old stuff laying around. Just recently bought a Falcon and plans on driving it everyday.

He's mentioned to me several times that he would love an ALLIANCE MEMBERSHIP, but he's had some family troubles and lost some money recently to an ex wife.

He's really a great guy. An older gentleman who works hard for a living driving a sand truck at the local sand plant. Really digs the HAMB....he's on here all the time.

Anyhow, I feel he would deserve one of the free memberships.

Even if nobody else votes for him, I just wanted to write this down and throw in a vote for my pal Bob ( LONE WOLF ).

My vote is for "Squirrel", Even though he is an alliance member already, his term is soon to be up and he is ALWAYS around to answer questions and help someone out and his knowledge is second to none

I'd like to cast my vote for Denise also. Maybe she'll give me her cookie recipes.....:D Seriously, I think her humor and help offered to everyone make her a great candidate.

BTW, I'll buy an Alliance membership next month. I haven't been cheapin' out on purpose. My eBay biz and job driving for a Ford dealer have been dead because of the holidays. But please do NOT nominate me.

  16. I think the cookie lady should get one. Denise rocks! I think the if he doesn't already have one, Uncle Scooby would be a great guy to give it to.

If Rikster doesn't have a membership, he should have. The guy has the best picture collection and photographic memory of what seems like every custom car ever made. And he's always willing to share his info.

HRLC gets a vote from me too.

keep this in mind when voting- this is really aimed at people that don't have a membership that would otherwise not have the extra scratch to spring for one because they're in college, have six kids, or just aren't in a place to pop for a message board membership at this time in there life... but are working hard to build a car and keep their life in motion etc etc...

HRLC is already an alliance member FYI- not that she doesn't deserve a free one- she does more than her fair share to help the hamb... and her cookies rule hands down...

So... I think in spirit candidates should be nominated accordingly- I was just thinking out loud... if someone wants to tell me to shut up fine... I probably wont listen to you haha...

I'm with Dave on this. Yorgatron deserves it. He's ALWAYS willing to drive, hitchike or roller skate to a person in need. He's also the smartest damn person on Hydramatic/Powerglide transmissions and THAT in itself is priceless for all of us *Me ME ME ME!!* idiots who run them.:D

Btw Scooterpie, I think this is absolutely fantastic and I'm highly jealous that you got to enjoy these neat folks longer then I did. It's hard swallowing one of them p***ing, Ernie, Jack..............

You can still hear Ernie's stories tho, his boy is MORE then ready to relive them all with you..............over a beer of course. =]

FlamedAbone, Ahotrod and Roothawg have all gone above and beyond to help me out (and inspire me). Don't know if they're members or not (I don't get out much). My experience here is limited, but those are my three picks.

I gotta vote for Yorgatron too, he & his bro led me to my '39 & then helped with emergency welding....supplied water & coffee at near midnight.....he'll always go out of his way to help or squish you like a fly if you piss him off! ;-)

But i have to mention Willie aka Williesplace who'd never met me but agreed to let me use his workshop for a while to fix up the '39.......& i might be milking it now but A32flathead who has always been there to help & if you know him you know what i mean......he must have helped out dozens of people on here just because its in his nature.

    Kev.
