Gschwen I believe Edmunds made one?It rained all day again, couldnt work on the Ford. I got the pistons out ,not enough ridge to make that hard.Nothing looks bad,rod journals measure to spec.I will get the crank out in the next couple of days. I am hoping a valve job, DSCN1140.JPG DSCN1141.JPG rings and rod and main bearings will do.That way I dont have to bother the local machine shop.I can do everything in house except bore cylinders,I have a boring bar but it is a"cycle-cyl boremaster" and is designed for motorcycles.I reckon I have about a weeks worth of parts cleaning ahead of me.

My new intake manifold got here today, that was fast! Headers should be here monday.I looked in the carb tub today and I actually have one of those old Ball & Ball carbs .There is one on the engine,so I should be OK for carbs. DSCN1145.JPG

My new headers actually showed up yesterday! I am going tomorrow to look at a model A frame and front end. They are certainly cheap enough,so I may end up dragging them home.May be a good basis for a plymouth powered something or other. DSCN1146.JPG

Went to look at the A stuff.Came home with a decent frame and a junk front end and a few pieces.whole pile cost very little.I can definitely use the frame and can likely pick some parts off the front end.So I reckon this is the plymouth\ford bobtail frame. DSCN1155.JPG

I finally got the engine apart tonite, looks pretty good other than being really, truly filthy! I believe I will take the cowards way out and haul the pile to the machine shop and get it tanked.I am going tomorrow morning to look at a supposedly good "A" front axle I found on CL,wish me luck. I'm thinking that would be traditional.................. if he used a pre-65 ratchet.

I bought that ratchet and a cardboard box full of 3\4 and 1" drive sockets used in the mid 70s.Not sure when it was made. That 3\4" drive stuff is kind of like a pistol or a big hammer, you dont need it often, but when you do you need it bad and right now!

You know Moe, it seems to me that you have a very bad memory. I recall that you offered that free engine no strings attached.

And now you sound all butt hurt about it.

I drove a fair ways myself to pick it up and planned to use it as you may recall I was looking for an engine to build at the time.

You offered to give it to me as you had no use for it.
You have a great many engines squirreled away that you likely will never use.
You said that it was in the back of your old truck and you needed it gone, you had no room for it.

In case you forgot, I brought my own picker to get it out of your truck.

I most definitely did say thank you.

I was happy to have been given an engine.

I was pleased to meet you at the time and now I am reconsidering that.

I haven't used that engine as the opportunity to buy a completely built engine from Visalia California ( Tim McMaster MCtim64) came up.

The engine you gave me is under my workbench as a spare core.

Next time you offer something to someone free of charge and with no strings attached, be sure to warn them first that you will likely bad mouth them down the road for no reason.

It was your choice to give it away, I never forced you to.

By the way, if I ever build that engine which it will need as it was a complete engine ( but in reality not a running engine, more of a core) then as I stated, that free engine will end up costing money. As they all do.

Had a chance to wire wheel the "A" frame today and get it PORd.Also got the valve covers off the Plymouth, this has to be the dirtiest engine I have ever seen! DSCN1164.JPG DSCN1167.JPG

Spoke to a friend tonight at the weekly cruise who knows about the speedster project.Turns out he has a banjo type 46 ford pickup rear that uses an open driveline?? Says I should come and get it. I will surely do that, but I never knew there was such a thing. Can anyone tell me about it?I will of course take pictures when I go get it.

    Hi Stein
All Ford pickups 1946-1948, I think, used the Banjo rear with open drive. Most were 3.78 or 4.11

Well I went over there today and sure enough, complete right out to the brakes.Turns OK after we got the brakes unstuck where some damn fool tried to pull the drum without backing the adjuster off.He gave me two wheels and tires that supposedly fit it.They dont, but I will take them back and see if we can find the right ones. Now I need to convert this to accept a transverse leaf setup. I am pretty pleased with all this.I have a good portion of the speedster chassis and havent quite spent 200 dollars.Of course this aint even the tip of the partsberg---- DSCN1182.JPG

Who decided its a slur?? That term has been used for 100 years with no problem. Now they tell me its 'bad' to say Jap. It appears to be an attempt to control us.

If you use parallel springs on the rear and transverse on the front you get that ol' time traditional bounce while driving it. We could always spot those by the way they rode down the street.

You're doing good. I had one of those little 218's in a 52 sedan that would cruise 60 mph all day long. Top end was around 80 mph if the speedo was right, and it would get over 20 mpg. There was a Car and Driver story on the 52 Coronet that put the 0 to 60 at a somewhat unimpressive 20 seconds, but your speedster will be a lot lighter than that car. A 3:78 rear with a 3 speed would put you pretty close to the OEM specs, but the 4:11's were better suited to the overdrive trans (which would still be cool if you could find one). I've got a 228 long block (Cdn.) awaiting a speedster I've been planning around a 28 Whippet chassis, so very close to what you're doing, but I paid $300 for my motor/trans. Looking forward to your build's progress. You planning to leave it 6 volt positive ground, or converting to 12 volts? Engine oils didn't have much in them for detergent when that motor was new, so that probably explains the extra sludge.

Who decided? Well you could visit many different online dictionaries, but here's something from Wikipedia:
Chink (also chinki, chinky, chinkie, or chinka) is an English-language ethnic slur usually referring to a person of Chinese ethnicity.[1] Use of the term is often considered offensive and has garnered a great deal of media attention

It's ok Archie, if you put on a tinfoil hat their attempts to control you won't work.

Manyolcars it looked to me like the A frame is kind of short to use paralell leaf springs or I would do so.I reckon I could go to the junkyard and see what I can find for short ones.Whtbaron I am thinking of going to 12 volts but may not since I have the generator that came with the engine.Thank you zapato.

Great project, lots of progress in a short time. How easy is it to get bearings, rings and gaskets for these engines?

  28. easy, you oughta definitely swap the pistons for modern lighter ones. Can also get your stock cam reground and the head milled a smidge for mo' ooomph.

Easy to get parts for, just not particularly cheap.Turbo roadster I CCd the chambers (82cc average) and .060" off the head with the existing HG thickness will give me right at 8-1.Do you have an addy for the place that regrinds the cams?

PM hitek on this forum, for anything related to high-performance Chrysler flathead 6s. He can suggest a grind profile, and get it done for you.....
