  1. Sure am glad we did not know 55 was tops when I was a teenager! Would have been boring.

A ton of great info guys, I really appreciate it.
It wasn't my plan to use it as a DD, but that being said, to get anywhere from my house I basically have to do freeway.
IMHO it's too nice and original for me to do a SB or LS, but I could see a six bolt-in from a later car, maintain the character.
I don't have the time or space to do it right now, wasn't looking for another old car, but it sure is purdy and I've got bit (famous last words).
Only other option would be to buy it then store it until some time in the future, the wife will kill me, more famous last words...

Get the car and drive. More importantly get PK Suban back and drive over the Habs GM with you old Chev!

  4. If you think a '48 Chevy can't keep up with traffic, I know a guy who has an old Essex. Which is a handful to drive even at 30 or 40.

buy the coupe, drop in a 283 with a turbo 350, change the rear, add disc brakes. you got a freeway driver then

Or just buy a car that has a V8 already.

Best suggestion so far. In Houston, during rush hour, 50+ is a dream. The average is probably 45 mph. But during none peak hours, I usually do 70 mph in my daily and I get passed a lot. The limit here is 60, if the cops are out. What's your area like? Answer that question truthfully and you'll know what to do.

Back in the day everybody understood ... The speedo in these early marvelous street machines are perfectly calibrated fine instruments, indicating your very speed, even when in neutral gear and flying down a barren steep downhill slope without engaging hydraulic huck drum brakes.

The needle passing the highest numbers was intended for pure inspiration and hope of a positive future of safe speeds in everyday traffic and how a car may handle at such speeds.

The bravest ones who crossed that barrier shall forever remain unforgotten by those who can today text and drive safely at 90 mph right next to you on this great nation's many a freeways.
