To put a cap on this, I have occasion to use some oddball sizes. I have found the best source for these to be an outfit called "The Freeze Plug Factory". I believe they are in San Diego and manufacture and distribute all varieties.:) I have found them to be an excellent source.

At some point in time I got it stuck in my giant  brain that these shallow core plugs were known as "welch" plugs. Or does that term also apply to the more commonly seen "cup" plugs as well? o_O

Even more obscure, I have seen them described as 'Welsh" plugs.

I have been to Wales. I did not see anything present that would approximately be such a thing.o_O

They don't fit any known definition of either word.

I agree with welch plug, and no capital w.

    Edit: Hmmm, I stand corrected.

Something's wrong (with preparation, technique or plug itself) if replacement "welch" plugs come out by themselves. It's a very reliable design.
I use Permatex 2 on them.

I had a leaking plug in my car, the mechanic at work told me to go get the rubber one with a washer on both sides. Issue was no way to knock a new one in. So we get the rubber one in and he tells me “it’s a temporary fix. Going to have to pull the engine eventually “. Well, being young, I sorta forgot about it. Sold the car maybe 15 years later and many miles, still had ge squished rubber plug in it.

With a capital W, the name makes perfect sense.

    Without, nonsense.

This ties into my point about using the correct names for things.

Confucius supposedly said, "Wisdom begins with calling things by their right names".
Of course the Analects, attributed to him, were written long after he went the the great junkyard in the sky.

Napa has the permatex sealer. Welch plugs fit blocks with a step in the hole. If step is removed, use conventional core plug, install with a socket that fits inside the cup wall of the plug, and drive it in, just hitting in the middle with hammer distorts plug and it will fail. Same method for welch plug. No magic bs involved.

By the way, for circle track, we used Dev- Con epoxy and 3 screws ( 10-24) around the perimeter, both types of plugs.

I thought, and probably shouldn’t think, Welsh refers to people, welch refers to the plug. Crap, now I gotta go Google it.

Welch, with a capital W refers to the plugs.

Without the capitalization, it means to avoid payment.

Just like it is not dzus fasteners. It is Dzus fasteners.

Proper names, and proper nouns are always capitalized

See, I thought it was Welsh-people with the “s”. And a “c” for the plug. Oh well, I’m going just ask for “those round things that go in the block” next time;)

Back in time, just after someone invented fire, in an electrical engineering class the prof said that motors are electrical devices.
A starter motor is common to our use. A starter engine is common to older large diesels; also called pony engines.

they are all “ correct” as you can go into pretty much any parts house and ask for one or the other and end up with the correct plug you require .

I’m sure one or two are more “ corrector “:D but , well ….. whatever .

When I started at Jaguar I went to the parts dept and asked for a compression fitting .

I got a lot of raised eyebrows and “huh’s??”

when the parts guys figured out what I was looking for found out they ( compression fittings ) are called ferrules and olives .

    Ok , sure ……. I need 2 of those !

No matter you call it the front and rear of GMC’s have them but not the sides. Many are used at the rear for a cam oil seal to the block. Another place to use Permatex #2 (aviation form a gasket) for me.

That's best practice. Of something either does not work, or is risky, just replace it with something that does.
