I just fired the French Flathead in Old Rusty. The back story; I built this motor last spring and thrashed to get it into Old Rusty for the Nostalgia Nationals Drags in June last year. It ran well but had a dreadful oil leak.. I tested it for cylinder leakdown and the reason I couldn't keep the oil in was excessive blowby. Serves me right for not prepping the bores correctly. I pulled the motor and refitted the old 21stud which saw me through the drags last September and this years Nostalgia Nationals. Anyhoo, over the last few weeks I tore down the French motor, honed the bores and fitted some new .045" rings - a hard to find size. I just put it back together and swapped it into the Roadster. As custom dictates, I video'd the startup.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBuyhSecfyo Listen for the genuine surprise.. Mart. PS I have 1 week to debug it before the drags..
Sounds good mate, glad to see your garage is as messy as mine, and as somebody else said it was one of the first builds on line for me. Cheers, Phil
France has 3 things they have given to the world fries, taillights and flatheads, other than that the can go f-themselves......
Damn Mart I LOVE that car - good to hear you nutted it out !! Its great when things just work out. Im about to fire my new blown stroker - wish me luck brother !! Rat
Thanks for the input. Glad there's people out there getting a kick out of hearing me ramble on in my Birmingham accent. Fixed the water leaks no probs, just tightened the hose clamps a little tighter. Then looked at the carbs. Blew out the needle valves... no good, still flooding. Fitted a spring from an old fuel pump into the pump (noticeably shorter than the one in use before).. No good still flooding. Remembered that I ran these carbs with a regulator last time, but also was aware the old £20 94 on the 21stud ran with that pump and the stronger spring... without flooding.. So looked again at the needle valves.. The carbs had modern replacement ***emblies, non dismantleable, with a disc of rubber like material closing off the fuel. I replaced both with old proper job needle valves and seats from old carbs... Bingo.. no more flooding.. There's got to be some kind of a lesson learnt there. I noticed a knocking today... bit worried about it.. I listened to the video and I can hear it on there too, towards the end of when the motor was running. You can hear it when the revs are raised.. (around the 4:30 mark) I have an idea what it might be, and will investigate tomorrow. Watch this space.. Mart.
awesome dude, just hearing your brummy accent reminded me of friends in kidderminster. sometimes you miss home.
