I know that the guy who supervised our rebuilds commented on the plug being in the wrong way the first time we took it apart. Question is which way was the wrong way to him, the correct orientation or the ordinary orientation?
Might be time to find a bore scope and sneak it up past the flywheel / flexplate to check that plug. Easier then separating the engine and trans.
We are good on that freeze plug. Got a second opinion, and pretty sure we now have rod knock. Came from low oil pressure when our distributor was not properly engaging the oil pump.
Our distributor, we didn’t catch that it was starting to round out at the bottom with the old pump shaft after some idiot who had owned it previously put it in wrong. We put it on a new shaft, and the new shaft was a harder material. It finished the job just about, and we found ourselves low on oil pressure, with a knocking engine and a need for a new distributor.
Been there on a take over ***embly. I could say the guy before me didn't check and clean the old oil pump. I was warned when I primed the engine on the stand. Had pressure then pressure dropped. I just wanted to finish and install the engine thinking the rpm's of the engine would be greater than I with a speed handle. You know, I didn't escape having to remove the oil pan to take a look inside to find the problem but now there was a whole lot more because I refused to recheck everything.
I watched the video it sounds like a top E̲n̲d̲ noise of some type push rod or rocker arm. It wouldn't hurt to look at the flex plate for a crack though
Time to pull the motor and do a complete teardown. A rod may be knocking due to the low oil pressure, but a bunch of other damage could have been done in short order. It definitely ****s, but no need to cut corners at this point. Good Luck
I've seen this too many times you run a new engine with out an oil pressure gauge. Last month neighbor called new engine from rebuilder can't get it run right. Vacuum advance hit and would not let him get the timing right, moved the distributor one tooth and thought that dropped in to easy pulled the distributor no oil pump drive. The 6 mile test drive proved to be to much no gauges hooked up.
Pulled the motor for the third time since October. I won’t be around doing the work on it at this point, dad and my buddy (the one who started the whole process by blowing a head gasket) will be working on getting it on the road while I am away at college in Huntsville. I hope they get it running by Thanksgiving so I can actually drive it (read: drive outside the neighborhood without listening for noises) for the first time in over a year.
