Ok, so I have the disease. My dad introduced me to the disease as we tried to keep our rusty fleet on the road when times were tough in the early 70's. Learned a lot about cars and how to swear like a real man. I had a cool Dart in high school, complete with slotted aluminum mags - that started out as a $400 dollar mail delivery car. While in College, the tortion bar blew out one night, coming home from a punk rock show in Pittsburgh - with a load of people in the car. "Everyone lean to the left". I went through several boring cars after that and eventually came back around in the late 90's to realize I was living in denial. I bought a 60 Olds Super 88 sport coupe from a friend of a friend. I had never seen one before, but couldn't get over the Jetson-esque, space ship rear end. After removing the years of rodent dammage and remains, I got her back on the road. She drove like a boat. I was living in Brooklyn NY and had the car at my parent's house in Ohio. I would drive home a couple times a month to work on it. Then I needed a truck, so I bought, fixed and hopped up a 59 chevy apache fleetside that I sold when my wife and I moved to Texas - still miss that truck. I brought the Olds down here, and having built my ideal workshop, I tore it apart to rebuild it. Not sure why I fell in love with such a large piece of tin, but its cool - don't see them very often. I soda blasted the thing in my back yard and found all kinds of new projects; Rear window ledge, door, quarter panels (front to back), etc. ugh. 2 kids later and I am still staring at primer, but atleast its ready for paint. I rebuilt the 394 and had a guy in California modify a 700-r4 to replace the original slip-junk-throw-away tranny. I am standing at the midpoint of reassemble and can't wait to get on with it. In the meantime, I have to keep myself from losing focus, by not buying up some of this excellent southern tin here in Texas. Well, thats my story. Enjoy the photos. The shot of the car below with paint in tact was before I tore it down. Decided to drop it, shave it and modify the grill and buug eyed headlights.
Welcome, Ohmboy! Keep up the good work. Enjoy the build. I know the finished Olds seems far off right now, but it will get finished, and then...well...it'll be finished, and you'll be-a lookin' for another project. Enjoy the build. Rick
