There are some things in this world, a man just doesn't do... For me, electrical...can't see electricity unless it's too late... The other thing, my old man used to tell me to stay away from ******'s... both kinds...

Anyway, the transmission on the 54 just went out... Long story short, been driving her just about every day, noticed severe vibration at higher speeds, got her home, took a look, and damn!

The bushing sleeve has come out and the seal is obviously gone... Just debating on my next move, because I know these things can be pricey...

So my options are as follows, and I'm in need of advise....

Anyone know what type of ****** I could replace the original with, one that would allow a little more on the top end, without having to fabricate too much, cutting or welding?

Also, (and I know this may be an oxy*****) but anyone know a good, HAMB friendly transmission guy in Houston?

If you are mechanically challenged, your best bet is to locate another stock ****** in good condition and install it in place of your old one. There are lots of them around so price should be cheap... Try the HAMB Cl***ifieds first. If no luck, try Flat-Top Bob at Owens Auto Salvage (a HAMB-O-Dex vendor) who will certainly have a good one and will ship it...or you can go and get it. Owens is in Wellington, Texas and not too far from you. Give him a shoutout!

    Good luck! :)

Thanks Eric, great place to start...just out of curiousity, where would one track down a ****** rebuild kit? Are they easy to come about?

    Thanks again.

I don't know. From what you've said I'd suspect that your ****** is junk, especially if you drove it for any length of time after the rear seal allowed the gear oil to escape.

I'm afraid you're on your own here. I expect that even a ****** tear-down by a reputable shop will cost more than a used ******. Hopefully another member can be of more help.

Edit: I just remembered that I have a ****** that came with my '52. I know nothing about it, but suspect it may be for a '52 Ford. If you'd take the casting numbers off your transmission I'd be happy to compare them to the ones on the ****** I've got. If they match, you're welcome to it...but you'll have to come and get it. I'm not set up to ship anything that heavy. PM me.

    Good luck! :)

Too bad you're so far away from me (Michigan)! I also have a couple of Fordomatics, one's out of my '56 parts car (was behind a 312) and I have another one still in a '54 Crestline (still behind the 239) parts car that's up north on my old hunting property. Condition of both is unknown but I'm not going to do anything with either of them. I'm not set up to ship and it'd likely not be worth the cost anyway, not knowing the condition of either. My guess is that either Mac's or Dennis Carpentar would have rebuild kits but maybe even NAPA or one of the other local chain auto parts stores?

Uh, oh! I just ***umed that yours was a three speed standard. If yours is an automatic, I really can't help you. The ****** I have is a standard.

Uh oh, I made an ***umption too! I thought automatic. . . but am prepared for any/all contingencies (part of that "Army training"...) I've got a 3 speed sitting under the bench in the shop too. sorry for any confusion!
