The old-fashioned way, of course...with an X-acto knife...

At one time, art supply stores sold what was called "Letraset half-tone" in various percentages and line screens (yeah, I know, sounds like Greek, right...??) on single sheets. Well, I have a good supply of those, and I still use them for silk screening...they are virtually non-existent at art supply stores these days. I don't even think the Letraset company (out of England) is still in business, thanx to the computer.

LOWCAB-very cool ,jez-h-r: both those pics rock, but the second one is my favorite:),Sonny Depalma: those wheels are absolutely sick, hudson:sweet work man, and Django I really dig that first shirt:D

40StudeDude, I'll be looking for a truck just like that this spring! Hopefully a real one though:D

Here's a few bikes I did this week. The first one I did for Ryzart:).

Here's another one I call "dirty classic". I usually sandblast, wire wheel, and clearcoat the bikes. This one I like the darker look, so I sandbalsted away the yellow zinc residue from the "engine" bolts and the just wiped the rest down before clearing. It'll be going in my online store.

And this one really is a just a bike:

Thnaks for the info, and now that you mention it I remember using some of that in my screenprinting class back in high school. Never thought about using it on an actual illustration. The computer world has taken the life out of some artforms, but I believe its added so much more! Like the drawing I posted...I drew it the "old fashioned way" then colorized it and added a background in a matter of seconds...just another tool.:D

Wow!......Again with the cool illustrations! Think I need one of those single Singer Shirts! I went out and got a part time J.O.B. UPS orientation yesterday, so I really have nothing new that I can post. I was able to get 1 thing done, found this cool skull on line in an image search for Helmets. I needed to get something drawn quick to the old hand crank chainstitch, so here it is. My apologies if Ive stolen it from one of you guys! Not for sale......sample only! I hope to have more of this Traditional embroidery in the near future.

  8. Glad to see somebody still breaks out the x-acto knife and the letraset...do you still use rubylith too? I used to have a pretty good stash of the letraset stuff too but it's dwindling and after years in our dry climate it's getting pretty stubborn to work with. Pontiacres/Ed the chain stitching looks great!

  9. we should have an art challenge using chartpak and letraset press type an graphic pattern, cept i think i finally threw mine away about a year ago along with a hunk of photo stat paper. anyone still have a lucagraph?

  10. I was giddy when they finally dumped the rack full of that stuff in the dumpster where I worked in 1988... We still used ruby and amberlith to do 2 color and screens for a while even after we printed "galleys" right out of the $5000 laser printer.

  11. I had one until about two years ago and loaned it back to a buddy who has since, sadly, passed away and I don't want to bother his widow about getting it back...what a great tool that was in creating art

Rubylith, Amberlith, Chartpak (red) block out (adhesive) film, Formatt;Chartpak;Letraset lettering and graphics and half-tone sheets, Rapid-O-Graph pens, India ink, french curves, elipses, clip-art and Dura-lar wet media acetate...I have it all. The last time I went to GG's Scottsdale event, I went to a large sports silk-screener in Mesa and bought their complete library...

Agreed, the computer does have its place...and prolly, one of these first days, I'm going to have to learn it...my supply of genuine art stuff prolly won't last forever...until then, I do it all by hand and make a good living at it ...

And just to keep this on-topic, here's a Deuce I did...

  16. i love the computer but really enjoy sitting down with my rapidograph's and inking up a nice design for a customer though nowadays I hardly ever get to do it as most customers supply their own art and we just clean it up...used to love working with rubylith on those dry Santa Ana Winds days

  17. A box of sharp #11 blades, a roll of Rubylith, a set of headphones and a few cold beers makes for an awesome evening, in my opinion.....

  18. robschwager it does make for a very "zen" experience...
