Drew this baby from memory during an in-between moment last weekend at the last Coffee & Chrome Mile End gig. Now we're off to Morphettville.

Pencil on A3 paper. Wasn't mad on it- warmer to it today. A rework would fix it some. Have a good weekend..

A long time ago, there was an article on the “Battle Birds.” My brother and I read about them back in those early magazine days. Another neighbor had a 57 Mercury and we were amazed at what could be done to modify that huge cruiser to make it race ready instead of a custom car. The T-birds were already cruising around Long Beach. So, again, those modifications on the T-Birds and that huge Mercury sedan were amazing to us little kids.

My brother’s favorite was the big Mercury, while I was enthralled with the sleek Thunderbird. The "Mercs" could be cool cruisers similar to the late 50s Thunderbirds that were made from Ford for high paying customers. The T-Birds were also popular at the Lions Dragstrip with their supercharged motors.

The “Battle Birds” were basic white, but drawing them was difficult and well, just plain. So, a little color was added to see the design in different editions. Our goal back then, was to see them at Bonneville racing against the other modified sports cars during that time period. The heck with Halibrands, bring on the screw-in Moon Discs. Perhaps, a clear Lexan ****pit shield for extra streamlining?


While adding in some color to the plain white Battle Birds, it reminded me of the 1970s, where there were the “Jelly Beans” in Porsche Sports Car racing. This is the Bonneville color chart for racing T-Birds. (and my grand daughter’s drawing day projects for me, no flames this time)

 

I took this photo last week at the Western Md. Street Rod Round Up. I thought that the mountain it's in (West VA.) Made for a nice back ground.
