    Hello,
Well, that was an odd Friday Art thread beginning... What happened to the post to start around 5 am as usual?

Here is the story to go along with the artwork for the week. This is a vision of those past times with the thoughts of an old time woody wagon and different modifications.

When we were teenagers anxious to get to some waves during the Thanksgiving Week Vacation, we started out with a quick dinner with our parents on a Wednesday night. Then off we drove a long 4 hour drive South to Baja, Mexico. At the time, it was the only way to satisfy our parents for a family dinner in the November holiday.

So, it was a Wednesday night to late Sunday night vacation prior to the end of the year. Once we came home on a Monday morning and missed a half day of school. The traffic was less and we were also rested for the long drive home. A quick 4 day surf adventure south of the Border.

But, as the ensuing years came, the Wednesday night dinner was on Tuesday, then Monday and finally during our senior year, we left on a Friday night the prior week. So, the normal Thursday Thanksgiving vacation started on the early Friday and lasted until the Sunday afternoon drive home after Thanksgiving. A full 9 day surf adventure that definitely fulfilled our needs. Including a nice turkey lunch, dinner and yes, breakfast, on the Baja beach cliffs, too.

We were extremely lucky as our parents trusted us, especially my brother and allowed us to miss school for those extra days. Our mom was happy because, she had our dad take her out to a fancy restaurant for Thanksgiving Dinner. (no slaving away all day for a big event…)

The vans ruled the surf world at the time. The VW vans were the mainstay, but the new Ford Econolines with more power and comfort started making their headway. Later on, the Chevy vans also started enjoying the fellowship of surfers South of the border.

The yellow Model A Woody Wagon was a dream of course, a suicide door set up, a slight chopped top, A/C and the reliable SBC motor. Our funky vans and sedan deliveries were not as nice, but did the job of getting us down there and back without any problems.

Although, a friend had his Red sporty car with a rack that looked like the Red woody below carrying two longboards. And finally, there were several old Ford pickups with the longboards just stuck in the bed of the pickups. The drawn woody versions were modified from the yellow hot rod woody above. But, the real cars had the racks and boards in those configurations. YRMV

Being two good teenage sons, we may have brought smoked turkey and the fixings in our custom 29 Ford Station Wagon. It would have been modified to work as a vegetable/fresh fish showcase delivery panel van with all of the goodies, so our mom would not have to cook on Thanksgiving.
    upload_2022-11-25_15-48-18.png Happy Thanksgiving vacation...

But, our improvised delivery/family dinner would have been on Friday after school as we wanted a 9 day Baja Mexico surf trip, instead of the normal THU-SUN vacation. We learned to do the Thursday through Sunday vacation surf trip, but add in 6 days of extra surfing added to the adventure and fun… Being nice had its rewards.

These days, school districts are starting their Thanksgiving Vacation days to coincide with all week instead of 3 days. So, some progress has been made. Created in 1960.

  16. As I said on a previous FAS thread. If we had any issues with you running this thread @Moriarity we’d have disowned you by now.
