Nope. It floated because of aerodynamic pressure distribution over the hood. It would have floated with the grille or even the underside of the engine bay blanked off. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernoulli's_principle

  2. it rains in Florida
I had them forward it felt like it leaned out the mixture
    so I run em bakwards

I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for educating me :)

I'm still not sure how that relates to the directing the scoop is facing though?

Face half of them to the left and half to the right. That way you have more power going around corners.

always released the hood latches when racing my vette, don't think the hood ever came open---but we did not have wikipedia back then---later i did put a forward facing scoop on it that was sealed to the hood to get cooler air to the carb---with the cfm those carbs do those "scoops" are more about looks than performance and they look best facing forward...

  9. Always put as many forward as backwards. If an uneven number, put one sideways.

Makes sense to face backwards , better natural air flow ,and ward off rocks and bugs. Yeah I know a painted scoop facing forward looks fast , but in my opinion wrong.

Never been there. Two things I am aware of:
Driving a station wagon with only the rear gl*** opened, makes for a very windy ride.
Deisel truck, curved outlet end, exhaust stacks, will have more power at speed
if the outlet is on a 45* angle.
If the stack is facing straight rearward performance is less due to lack of exhaust scavenging.

Oh good. Let's revive an 11 year old thread to hash this out some more :)
