And here I am waiting for my bonus money when the contract I work for is renewed and the extra cash from my tax return to buy some spindles for my model A "rustbucket" sedan. Maybe even some dropped spindles for my 50 Ford or some rust repair panels that I badly need for same car. Most things over $100 dollars I need to feed my hot rod habit I have ta wait for "bonus checks" such as tax returns and so forth. I'm 26, have 2 kids and a wife so money is tight. I came outside to go to work one morning and one of the dry rotted tires on the rear of my 50 just popped ( betcha never saw that happen) sitting there. Good thing it happened there instead of the interstate. Being Christmas and all I couldn't afford new tires right now. So a swell coworker offered up the steel wheels and tires off his late model Jeep Cherokee he just wrecked if they would fit. Hey if its free its for me, by the way they bolted up perfect and are damn ugly ( soon to be fixed by some flipper hubcaps) but at least i'm back on the road. The paint is just bubbling up and flaking off so now a paint job is in order. But being that a good paint job these days can run upwards of a couple a thousand dollars it looks like primer will my my saving grace for awhile. My car is getting a "patina" that I don't want! Yes I would love to have the top chopped, finest tuck and roll interior and smooth candy paint just not in the budget right now, saving to buy a house. All this and the 8 track player just blew up yesterday, yes I said 8 track, remember what I said about free? Found in my attic no less! Car CD players ain't free. If my rusty model a ever comes together I doubt it will ever see paint due to the ****ed up body and bird**** welds on the body. I did score a complete set of 48 Ford brakes at the last swap meet for $35 dollars so its coming slowly but surely So basically most people know it takes money to play in this game and someone even had the nerve to tell me I should sell my cars to "someone that can afford them". Boy was I ever pissed, I still have hot rod dreams just like anyone else. So basically Charlie I can see where you are coming from and from a few folks primer ain't about fashion or "kulture" its just a means to get by. I wouldn't rip the guy for putting shiny paint on that model A, it looks good other than the wheels, but if mine is ever to come together it will probably look more like the first pic.
Charlie, Whatever things we moan and ***** about now will be remembered as "the good old days" in ten years time, so the POS cars that guys had when they were much younger and much poorer are now happy and fond memories. Nothing wrong with trying to re-live a few good memories, whatever it takes to make it work. Of course, this could take us back to the old 'what IS a hot rod' argument Just my humble opinion. Paul
You got that guy's number?!?! I wanna call and see if he's still got the old intake and carbs... I'm sure he'd part with that "junk" pretty cheep... gotta make a payment or two on his tudor, I'm sure...
actually, both versions are pretty cool in there own right,PERSONALLY,i like ***uses version because for me it reminds ME of a time when hotrodding seemed more about a persons ability to do the best they can with the means they have.lets face it fellas, there were'nt NEAR as many "hot rod" shops a guy could drop into for high-po speed parts,or a custom paint job,or even a trick suspension set up for that matter.it never ceases to amaze me to read or even listen to someone like my father tell stories about some of the things they would do on there own because, like charlieled said,"they did'nt have the money".well, although i did'nt live it and i am "doing the same thing for different reasons"let me just say that my reason is,i admire the things my dad and guys like charlieled had to do to get by,and appreciate the insperation they give me to want to hotrod everything i own.although it may be easier for someone nowadays to quote:"finish"a car, mine will resemble something like what ***us has as a tribute to people like my father, who helped make hotrodding ****ing kool!!!.....quickrod
[ QUOTE ] When I see a car like the ones I owned and drove (like your rat rod) I feel a twinge of nostalgia...but then again, when I see that car finally in a state of "completion", I'm even happier because I see a dream that many of us had come to be fulfilled. It's hard to explain, I guess it's one of those things that you had to live... [/ QUOTE ] this is what's also known as an "old man rod" or "midlife crisis rod"..much the same reason a rich old man buys a harley...it's somethin he couldn't afford to fix up and now he can.well,i STILL can't afford to fix somethin up but i KNOW i wouldnt have dreams of doin that to that car..the paint job was sooo tacky that it looked like a hotwheels toy.the point i'm tryin to make is i'm not knockin you for havin big dreams when you were a kid,but if those were your big dreams, man, you had some bad dreams!
"A hotrod is never finished, until there's a for sale sign in the window." Then it's just a start for the next owner. If ya didn't want to see it changed ya shoulda kept it or parted it out. I don; understand what looks like aprons under the body and it needs "more" flames or none at all, but I don't see anything seriously wrong with the new "finished" hotrod.
Not really feeling the wheel and tire selection or the stupid flames. Other than that stuff, if he didn't stick a bunch of billet on it and put a dumb tweed interior in it I think it could be saved. It has good potential as a 60's show rod. Throw some wild metal flake scallops on there & loose that gawd awful hood scoop & go back to the multi-carb set-up.
1975....Put this RS/SS 67 Camaro together, then sold it to a good friend for much less than it was worth....he had it a week and did this to it......I'd rather see it with billet wheels today.
