So i decided to lower the front end of my '55 olds the right way and went with a set of Fat Man Fabrications dropped spindles. The units looked really well put together and well thought out. Well, its been 5 months since i've put the new spindles in, 4 alignment shops and $500 still cant figure out why it wont align, and another $500 in tires have gone up in smoke. The car has A LOT of negative chamber and slight toe in on the drivers side. I dont understand why no shop that i take the car to can figure it out. I had it aligned before i drove to Paso in May and it drove great, but by the time i got back the thing was screeching around 5 mph corners and the insides of my front tires were showing steel. I took it back to the shop and they said that the alignment they had done had "fallen out" due to worn out parts, but i've taken that front end apart 4 times now and nothings loose. I dont know what to do, i havent driven the car since may and it's august, all the prime cruising months. Any help will be great, i just want to see my car back on the road.
IF the alignment is changing as you drive, and you aren't driving through every pothole you see or hitting curbs, you MIGHT have one of those dropped uprights(?) coming apart or bending at or near a weld(?) I don't know exactly how the Fatman parts are made but they are probably fabricated, so the above is always a possibility. Another possibility is non of the shops you've gone to understand the threaded ecentric pin that locates and adjusts the Camber and Caster at the top A arm or it's stripped or won't lock in one position for some reason. I'd be checking for a cracked or failing upright, and check that adjuster to see if it's shot. I've had two '55 Olds and know that that adjustable pin will wear out and the adjustment threads simply dissappear if it hasn't been regularly greased, and them the upright just wags around up there with every movement.
