. First a little history. My old 41 sedan has been on the road for about ten years. It has a mustang two front crosmember, factory a-arms,strut rod supports, etc that I got out of a salvage and only update it with new rotors, bearings, brake pads, ball joints, etc. Last summer it developed a low pitch wine that appears to be comming from the front of the car on the drivers side. The noise dissappears if you touch the brakes slightly or if you turn right. turn left and it doesdn't stop. I've checked the bearings, rotors and pads and can't find anything. If you put the car on jackstands you can't get the noise no matter what? I know that noise travels down drive trains, so I might be wrong on where it appears to be comming from..hey I'm sixty years old, eyes and ears aren't what they use to be. I have noticed that the yoke on my driveshaft is only in the tailshaft of the trans. about an inch or so...could this be the problem Any Ideal?????
Real hard for us to know if you can't find it with the car. But I sure would deal with that drive shaft issue 1st up. Maybe if it still persists get some body else in the car with better hearing and get a 2nd opinion. Let us know how you solve it for future reference.
how did you determine that it wasnt the bearings might i ask. ? a bad bearing on the right, most of the time, will quit making noise when you make a right turn. it's because the weight of the front end has shifted to the left side. and vice versa. the fact that you believe it to be on the driver's (left) side, and it quits when you turn right, would kindof rule out the left bearing. i had a backing plate that would do a similar thing on my trailblazer (piece of junk). it was barely touching the rotor, and would quit whining when i turned the wheels or stepped on the brakes. the fact that it doesn't make the noise on jack stands, leads me back to looking at the bearings. once again, the weight is off the bearing, causing the noise to go away. i hope you get it fixed either way. and please address that driveshaft issue. they can turn you daily cruiser into a 3500 pound catapult. good luck, and let us know. d.d.t.
I pulled both wheels, inspected the bearings and repacked them with no difference. I plan on checking the driveshaft issue this weekend. I plan on using a longer yoke to gain about an inch in lenght??
I actually did this last summer with my brother who insisted it was comming from the rear and thought it was the self adjusting brakes and proceeded to drive in reverse and slam on the brakes. He did thid 6 or 7 times and the noise seemed to go away.....but about 10 minutes later it was back and still seems to be comming from the left front(driver's side) to me. I have tried doing the same and it will go away, bur several miles down the road it returns....go figure
Check clearances, check rotor to tire, rotor to caliper, rotor to backing plate, etc. If you find nothing, bend the little wear indicator on the brake pad, it might be too close. Did you apply anti-squeal to the back of the pads?
