I know its pretty straight forward but dont want to distort or damage anything. What is the easiest & least damaging way to remove both front fenders & radiator core support with fender liners in one piece(complete front clip)?... I have the vehicle on jackstands with the front wheels off and i was looking in the fender wells by the fire wall & I count 5-6 bolts that I believe need to come out, what about around the front of the vehicle. I know I need to remove the front front bumper, skid plate & splash shield. Also will the hood hinges stay attached to the fire wall. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Its probably a dumb question, I guess I'm worried about messin' something up and need some words of encouragement.
Before you jump into it you need to be prepared,pm Retro Jim and get the 1949-59 Ford Parts Manual on CD,He offers a smokin' deal for members. The manual has blowups of all the components in your Ford that way you know where every part is located and it also lists all the part numbers, you can Google the part number and find suppliers on the web.The 1952-54 Ford Shop Manuals are also available on ebay on CD and will make your life a lot easier, whats cool about being on CD is you can print out the info you need and take it out to the garage with you.
You can take the entire front body clip off in one piece if you want. That's how they were build at the factory. There are several bolts on the inner splash panels at the firewall and two under the fender bottoms down by the doors and most importantly there are two bolts that hold the fenders to the cowl but you have to get to them from the inside of the car, thru the kick panels. Seems to me there are two more bolts under or near the bottom of the rad. Get a few of your buddies and lift the whole clip off in one piece.
on the 54 theres a little metal inspection cover on each of the front door jambs above the top hinges that have three screws holding the covers..unscrew them and theres a bolt under each one that holds the top of the fenders....dont know if its same as the 53 but wont hurt two take a look..
Thanks for the help guys. I removed the front end in one piece tonight, it was a lot easier than I thought it was gonna be. Now I just gotta figure out what to do for mounts. Hey do I need to modify the crossmember to make room for the SBC oil pan, I've seen a couple of pic's on here where it was done. Thanks!
thats a nice looking 6 with that offy on there !!did you toast it or something ?why you putting the sbc in there ,not that im against ,just wondering?
For tie rod and center link clearance you may want to use a Chevy Nova oil pan OEM style, the aftermarket pans have an extra kickout for more oil for drag racing but may interfere with the exhaust.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/62-6...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories you will also need the oil pump pickup tube. There is a possibility you won't need the notch up front with the Nova pan you will want to do a trial fit. Since you are going SBC also pick up these:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Rat-...tZVintageQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
This may give extra exhaust clearance using this style mount:http://www.speedwaymotors.com/1955-1994-Small-Block-Chevy-Engine-Mount,6725.html
jeff2b....those valve covers was like a soft kick in the nuts to funny rat trap make sure you post pics and details of the swap please, if my y-block takes a **** i have a crate 350 at my pops im gonna replace it with.
Yeah... thanks Jeff for the ever so subtle kick in the nuts J/K LoL. I think I will check into the Nova oil pan, didn't know about them, thought all the SBC oil pans were pretty much the same with exception of the performance pans. I like the Speedway engine mount & adapters... just wasn't sure about them, cause had not seen anyone on here use them yet. BTW I like those Ford wire looms. LostHope there is nothing wrong with the I6 just doesn't have the Ballz I'm use to. It is a pretty hopped up six too. The head was milled .010" and block decked .030" or vice versa cant remember exactly and its still to hot in the garage to go dig around for the paper on it, but I will later on so I can enjoy a beer while doin it.. LoL, also has brand new rocker ***y, bigger chevy valves & Schneider Racing Cam 264F which is 264 duration .450" lift, Offenhauser dual intake with 1 Demon 98 and a block off plate, never got around to buyin the other demon.... I also have header flanges for it. Its for sale. There are more pics of the engine in my albums but when I had the 94's on it.
