Oregon requires two plates, but on SP or AQ vehicles they only require one. Two of my rides are in this category and only run rear plates the same year as my cars. Never had an issue.

  2. CA requires two plates - I have always ran just 1- never been bothered even when I was younger.

  3. I live in Colorado where they DO require a front plate. I have been runing my various hot rods on and off for almost 50-years without the front plate. I always keep it in the car with a piece of bailing wire. I figure if I get stopped I'll just tell them it was about to fall off and I'll gladly wire it back on for them. So far, it's never happened.

no problem here, I was eating breakfast yesterday at a Whataburger
and one of he local traffic cops was there, he even came out and looked at the 52 and asked what yr it was, told him it was a modified 52, nice car he responded, have a nice ride and enjoy the day...

no problem with the no inspection sticker either, but if I drove it ever day
that might be a different story...

I had an OT truck (Trailblazer) for a project a couple years back. The owner (active duty Army, stationed in NY) had the front bumper replaced and no front license plate bracket was installed. Since I thought it looked good without the bracket or plate, and since I had lowered the vehicle, I bolted a 1" angle between the front body mounts and used an external door hinge to hang the front plate. When the vehicle was stationary, the plate hung down with about 2" clearance to the ground, but at speed it folded up and out of the way. No issues running either NY or TX plates in Texas, and no issues running TX plates in NY, but the gate guards at the base yanked the owner's chain about not having the plate mounted to the bumper. Since the tag was displayed when the vehicle was stationary they didn't have a leg to stand on, but they still wanted to make a deal about it.

They ended up making a deal about dark window tint instead, but that's another story.

It used to be a big deal in the 60s-70s but not nearly as bad as back then. I carry it under the seat. I run fenderless, bumperless with open lakes pipes and the cops pay no mind. If you are acting like an ass they might include that violation on their list of violations but I've never been hassled about it being that I'm a fine upstanding tax paying citizen.:D

In Oregon with standard plates you must have both F&B, but with vintage plates [although starting way back two were often used] you are now only required to carry the rear on your vintage rig. I don't know what "the Man's" approach is on that'n, and since once my ride's a roller it'll be wearing both, I guess it won't matter.

When I lived in Ohio I had an OT '86 Mustang GT that was from Indiana. Indiana does not require both plates so a lot of the cars here don't have the front mount. So I kept the extra plate inside the car just in case but never got stopped figuring they can't see both ends at once. Maybe a mount that's tucked behind your bumper out of sight that you can easily take the plate off and on. I also saw recently on an OT car with one somehow attached to the top center of the windshield inside - which would let you to hardly see out at all. Not much help but maybe a couple of ideas. Study other cars that have front plates and how they are mounted - they are some cool looking ones. You already have a good start with the vintage plates.

Here is the deal on my HHR SS I run with the License plate in the front window, The Law states that (yes I have it printed out) that you must have two License plates one in Front and one in Back (the Law does not say where in the front or where in the back?) I have gotten stopped 3 times now in my HHR SS and 3 warnings! 2 from the same guy (anyone coming up for the Lone Star Round up from Houston and Going thru Burton Texas be Warned!)

The Law Changes in April as the Front and Back License plate law was accedently left out of the law with the State Laws were revised. google it, it makes for a good read kinda funny. Since it was left out of the law it is no longer a crime (Do I hear Law suites?)

I am no longer a teenager, I am in my 40's and dont drive like a wild man anymore so not sure why I am Harassed about it but it was just a concern and I appreciate the comments, I do plan to keep my front license plate in the car but for now will leave it off until I find a nice way to mount it.

Here in N.Y. If the car is 1956 or older you don't need a front plate because the law changed to 2 plates in 57. I only run a back plate and never had a problem, I truly believe most of the cops don't know, or if they do they just don't bother you if you have a classic.

I've never been bothered by a cop for not having a front plate on the 51. Not only is there no where for it but no dash to speak of to put it on. The only ticket I got was by a meter maid in a small town. I'm pretty sure those tickets are just a cash cow for them so no love from them!

    Very true.
But Id say a huge majority of people in our area running just Ohio Historical plates, only run one.
I havnt run one on front in 12 years.
And against what they say, I have friends who run model year plates and drive almost daily 9 months of year, and havnt been hassled.

    **Knock on wood!**

The small town I live in cops will flip a U-turn in heavy traffic and risk causing an accident. Just to give you grief over no front plate. I once test drove a customers truck around the block at work after fixing it. A cop came flying down the middle of a three lane road with lights flashing. I turned in the shop out of the turning lane to get out of his way and he followed me into the parking lot. He jumped out started giving me Hell about no front plate. I got out and looked then explained it was a customers vehicle and I had no idea it did not have a front plate. He told me to let the customer know it is a law . As he pulled away I wondered who called it in. And why he ran hot with the lights on just to give me grief for it ?

here's the scoop for Minnesota License Plates

this is from 2011 should be the same for 2012
    Subd. 4.Collector's vehicle.

If the vehicle is (1) a collector's vehicle with a pioneer, classic car, collector, or street rod license; (2) a vehicle that meets the requirements of a pioneer, classic, or street rod vehicle except that the vehicle is used for general transportation purposes; or (3) a vehicle that is of model year 1972 or earlier, not registered under section 168.10, subdivision 1c, and is used for general transportation purposes, then one plate must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle, or one plate on the front and one on the rear, at the discretion of the owner.

you can register YOM plates on 72 and earlier
the only problem is not all cops know this law
best to print out the statute and carry it in the car saves a lot of explaining and delays

  19. I got pulled over in Colorado once for not having a front tag on my OKLAHOMA-registered vehicle. The dumbass Barney Fife that pulled me over was giving me the third degree about it, and I insisted to him that Oklahoma did NOT have a front tag and had not since after World War II. He gave me the ticket anyway, to which I made a copy later and sent it to the address on the ticket, saying I was not paying for that ticket because of the fact that OK doesn't even HAVE a front tag! Never heard back, but it never showed on my record as a unpaid ticket, either!

California say's you have to have em. As you can see by my Avatar my 56 do's not have one and it has not been a problem. Even been pulled over a time or two, and all I ever got was question's about how I did this or that or what muffler's are you running. Now my Daily OT 06 1500 GMC PU, a whole nother story. Removed the plate bracket hours after getting it home from the dealer new. Took about 3 years, but I got a no front plate ticket.

I thought I'd post this photo of front licence plates. Time was Jan. 1962. On the left is my older brother with his sleeper 58 Chevy 210, #1 plate, Jefferson county , Iowa. On the right me with my 1957 Ford convertable, Plate #2.
To get these plates we went to the courthouse the night before they started selling plates at 5:00 P.M. and camped out all night until they opened up at 9:00 A.M.
I still have my #2 plate but my older brother has passed away and I haven't be able to locate the plate. It may be lost forever.
My brothers 210 had a sbc with 3 twos on it. We often went to Kahoka, Missouri and dragged his Chevy.

Compulsory down under on front and back unless they are real old plates when they only issued one license plate that was attached to the rear. We have fixed and mobile speed cameras all over the country now and the authorities tout the old 'We're savings lives' line and rely heavily on front and rear license plates, a great revenue raiser. Reality is, it's a bit hard to issue a moving traffic violation to a vehicle if the license plate can't be identified. Motorcycles only have one plate anyway but once upon a time they required two (2). The authorities have now also introduced point to point cameras which rely heavily on license plate recognition and digital technology.
I recall being pulled over by the Police in my '48 Holden with OEM registration, a single rear plate. After a discussion of where my front plate was, I eventually was allowed to go.

When I was still working for the Sheriff's Dept., they warned that the private vehicles in the parking lot would be inspected for no front plate and registration. At another station, a Chief came by with a box of razors and ordered the illegal tint removed from personal vehicles.

Even the cops are cracking down on themselves............

here i socal you're supposed to have them, but on my 64 econoline i don't run with it on. i do keep it in the back with tie wraps and a true story. " when having my front bumper chromed i asked him to weld two fog lite holes, but he welded up all the holes" and i've been pulled over in it, but so far no ones asked me to attach the plate.

Texas law requires a front and rear plate and there are penalties for not displaying them. For the sake of my wallet I mount plates on both ends of my cars just like our State requires.
No point in giving any police officer, sheriff's deputy, state trooper or other law enforcemnt agent a reason to stop and inspect my cars. One silly violation can lead to a "walk around the car" which can lead to other silly violations that weren't seen and wouldn't have been seen if the plate had been on the front bumper.

  30. The first 32 roadster I ever had a ride in, had an great idea. He mounted both plates, sandwiched on the stock rear licence plate mount on the rear fender. One facing forward, one facing rearward.:D Seriously though, if you want to cross the border into the USA from here, they scan the front plate as you drive up to the border guard booth. No plate, let the hassle begin.:(
