I'm building a 28 Model A RPU from collected parts. I purchased a reversed eye front spring off of ebay and it appears to be one of Speedways. My problem is I'm keeping it relatively stock and the shackle eyes on the spring are bigger than my stock shackle bushing 3/4 id vs 5/8 od. I believe these springs use nylon bushings. So is there a bushing that will fit the spring and my stock shackle or can I run the stock shackle with a nylon bushing on the spring side and steel on the perch side? Or is there a shim/sleeve that will reduce the inner diameter of the spring to fit my steel bushing?

I ran into that on a tee I worked on for a guy. I used some rear shackle bushings that were 3/4 OD and had to make a sleeve to make up the difference in the shackle pin diameter and the ID of the 3/4 bushings. I have also made up some shackle bushings using a stick of Delrin I bought from one of the local plastic suppliers. They have it in different diameters and also have some that is hollow.... get the right size and just cut to length !

I didn't think about using Derlin that just might work. I checked the Speedway site and they had some 3/4 inch nylon and bronze bushings that might work so I ordered a set of the bronze we'll see if that works first I'll report back!

  4. If I remember correctly the '32 had a larger spring eye and maybe one of those would solve your problem.

If you are using stock type "A" shackles you don't need flanges on the bushing, just get
3/4"OD X 1/2" ID oilite bushings at a bearing house. I get four 1" bushings and cut the excess 1/4" off once they are pressed into the spring.

There we have the strange truth of todays hotrod parts. An A spring used to be an A SPRING, ready to mount as built. Why these odd changes have taken place over the last 10-15 years I can't imagine but this is a good example of change for no benefit to anyone.
