    Hello
has anyone ever overhauled broken thread in the control arm on mercury 1949 -1951.
the upper and lower spindle I found at jamco... but is there any possibility for the control arm

  2. What do you mean by broken thread? And upper and lower spindle? If we can figure this out, we can help.;)

  3. Pics?
The threads for the control arms looks strange to begin with.

It’s a shame it’s not for a Shoebox Ford I have several of them sitting in a shed. I’ve run across this kinda issue before with my ‘51 Tudor but the threads looked to be worn but the attaching nuts still tightened up and held great. If you need another A arm there has to be someone here who has some spares laying around. If not I’d go with a tubular arm but that usually means that you have to go with new ball joint type of spindles and disc brakes, not too traditional but it does improve the ride considerably.
Here’s hoping that someone out here has one for you.

  7. Are the cups for the shafts loose or not screwing in?
The threads in the control arms and cups are dull shallow threads not the same as the shaft itself

GRD, by threads, I assume you mean the places where the nuts (below, circled in red) for the control arm pivots screw into the control arms.
From the pictures you have shown, there seems to be plenty of thread left on your control arms. The nuts only have to be snug, they do not have to be torqued very hard. If there is metal missing where the threads are supposed to be, then you can build it back up with a thin layer solder or brass.

at the upper control arm the same

  12. Have you had these assembled, or are you just doing it now? Those "threads" are not like what you'de see in a regular nut = fine and sharp. Try to assemble one side and see what happens. The cross shafts have good threads.

The (GM Holden) I worked on, had the same joints back in the 50s - 60s.
Those ''threads'' you're worrying about are normal, the inner thread of the trunion bush pulls up on the inner thread, (this is the operating surface) and the outer (worn) thread locates in the A arm.
Assemble the joint by hand, ensuring all the components are even both sides of the arm, then tighten the trunion bushes until they both snug up against the A arm, and it'll be good.
Hope that makes sense to you..
