In Upstate NY, 60 miles east of Niagara Falls, the cold snap didn't amount to much. Coldest part of the winter so far, upper teens, low 20s for the highs, single digit lows, but this has been one of the warmest, least wintery winters I can remember. Little to no snow/snow cover until a week and a half ago. Jet stream is pushed way south in the midwest along the east side of the Rockies and returns North about halfway between Rochester and Buffalo. Jet Stream doesn't CAUSE the weather, but allows/pushes the cold air masses south.
Hooray! I just saw its back in the 70's in the hill country! I hope it doesn't happen again until they can make some improvements to their infrastructure to prevent it. Researchers are saying the the jet stream is "wobbly" due to the higher temperatures on the polar ice cap, and it makes it take these deep dives down south more often, so it could happen again. It also happened in 1989 and 2011 to a lesser extent, but there wasn't enough regulatory pressure to require winterization of the utilities equipment, since those modifications are expensive and would take a bite out of utility investors profits. Here's an interesting article on the issue. https://www.rawstory.com/texas-storm-2650619986/
Thank you for replying. The name Hay, is not that common and “Bill Hay”, the man I knew had kin folks in middle Texas. He served on the USS Enterprise with my Dad. Thought I would give it a shot. Bones
