Why is it when you get in a conversation (esp one you didnt want to have in the first place) with a non-car person about your project/hot-rod/hobby they always ask with a condesending tone "So what your are going to do with it when you are done? Sell it?"

Why on earth would I spend nearly every free second I have working on something, spending almost every free cent I have on it, dreaming of the day when I'll finally get to drive it, just to sell it when I am done and lose my ***?

And it never fails, when I say "Uhh, no I'm going to drive it..." They say I'll get tired of it and sell it. No AC, rides bad, rattles etc, your for sure going to sell it. Makes me want to strangle the person I am talking to. I love talking about the progress I have made, and try to only do so when someone asks, but cringe when its the uncle you never see, or the neighbor, or the brother in law that you know doesnt no jack about cars, much less have an appreciation for anything vehicle related at all.

Some people just dont get it.....

  2. When I finish a car, I usually sell it within a year. I get tired of them, and I enjoy the thrill of the build more than cruising.

    Sorry....

Dude.... Relax.... Different strokes for different folks...

How do you feel about quilting or collecting stamps? I don't get either of those things, but people still enjoy them.

Still be nice, and make sure to ask them if they know where any junky old cars are. Their trash is your treasure!

I have no idea how many people have wondered why I keep a 235 in my 53 Bel Air.

Good advice. Sell it? Answer: "Most likely, I just like building them. Know where I can find another one to work on?"

Doesn't mean you REALLY have to sell it.....

Ha, I was just coming back to clarify my point. I am referring to non car people that come up and actually ask you about your project, that cannot imagine that building a vehicle can actually be fun, and driving one is even worse. Basically people who without coming out a saying it say you are an idiot for wasting your time and money on this old piece of junk, and one day you will realize it and sell it. Hell, you probably wont even finish it. There is no way possible that driving an old vehicle, much less building one, is a hobby that anyone with any sense can enjoy.

Buy em, sell em, build em, drive em, whatever, thats all part of the fun.

I dont have conversations with non-car people about cars. Would you talk to them about their hobby if you arent interested in it?

I answer a lot of questions with, "Why?"

It has a tendency to end discussions I don't want to be in. :D

Exactly. I dont go up to the people knitting in the waiting room and ask them why in the hell are you making that ugly *** sweater for your grandkid, they arent ever going to wear it anyway, stupid grandma. But for some reason, I am a magnet for people wanting to "nicely" tell me how stupid I am for doing what I am doing.

Anyway, its not the end of the world, just wanted to see if you guys have to put up with the same bs from friends and/or family.

    HAHA!! FU!

Or, ask them if they are going to eat the remains of their Prius when it dies.

my advice... stop talking to people who bother you.

if you choose to continue talking to people who bother you, tell them to **** off. pretty soon the people who bother you will either stop talking to you or stop saying stupid things.

I took my '56 Victoria to a show with a bunch of restored Fords of the same basic model. After discussing the various changes I had made, one owner of a restored car asked "Why would you do something like that?"

I answered that I had improved several of the car's details in my eyes, and doing that was the reason I had bought the car in the first place. It was immediately clear that we were in two different conversations, and would never understand each other's motives.

  30. Holy **** I miss the old hamb.

Obviously you have lots to learn about people and yourself.
If you're going to let what other people say bother you, it will be one long, tiring, miserable life.
