I'm eighteen and I just inherited a 1956 buick that has been in my family and passed around. It has an electric fule pump. I am trying to do some of the repairs myself, but this is my first old car. Yesterday I was driving it around and it cut out. The electric fuel filter under the driver side door started making a loud knocking and clicking sound. I rolled the car into a vacant lot. It won't start, but when I turn on the ignition, the filter still makes the loud clicking sound. Do I need a new filter? What is the problem? Thanks
If your fuel filter is making noises, you have a problem ! I think you meant to say fuel PUMP - right ?? Either fuel pump is bad or the filter is clogged. Trace the fuel line and replace the filter & check the pump and the tank outlet for any obstruction.......outside of any enclosed building. Have a fire extinguisher in reach, just in case, too. If you're going to remove the pump, have a suitable container ready to catch the gas in the line and make sure you can stop the gas in the tank from draining by either closing off the fuel line, if able or siphon as much of the gas out of the tank as possible. Disconnect the battery first, before removing any wires to the pump.
