Finally replacing the ammeter and fuel gauge in my ‘59 Catalina from the meltdown during the drive from Denver. You can read about it here. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/berthoud-co-to-edmonton-ab-in-a-59-catalina.1115298/ I have a couple questions. Does it matter which wire goes where on the fuel gauge? The socket melted during the mishap so I’m now replacing that, but am not sure if the posts are specific to the power feed and wire to the sending unit. Also, I’m ***uming the ammeter doesn’t care which wire is where.... it’s just reading current.... or would the discharge and charge be backwards if I get the wires reversed? Thanks in advance.
Yes it matters, for both gauges. It probably won't kill the gauges though, they would just read backwards.
the fuel gauge does need the wires in the correct spot to work. The ammeter will read backwards if the wires are reversed.
Thanks for the replies. I was kind of suspecting that. The schematic doesn’t identify which wire color goes to which post .... just shows the wire colors going to the gauges. Any advice?
According to the 59 chevy truck ***embly manual, you connect power to the driver side of each gauge. Power is black on the ammeter, and pink on the fuel gauge. I think the guages are the same mechanism.
