fuel injection idea,,, your input?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by brutus t maximus, Aug 9, 2004.

  1. probably should just get the ole 55 running, tagged and insured first,,, but just can't seem to help myself..

basically every part of this chevy has been hand built by me, as far as chassis mods, power train etc.

it has a 472 cad in it now, and with the unimpressive, blockhugger style intake manifold that is typical for these engines, and my burning desire to build an intake of my own (sheet metal) along with my long time interest in fuel injection(alpha n, non electronic), i submit this idea for those of you in the know to pick apart or offer idea's on.

i understand that an alpha n system is basically a "race" only item not suited to the street... so.

what do you guys think of building an intake that has provision for a small rochester or the like 2 barrell to be mounted in the center of the stacks to provide for normal idle requirements, and street driving?

perhaps with progressive linkage that doesnt allow the stack injection system to come in until above 75% throttle, then the last 25% would be basically wide open throttle anyway.

i can see possible problems with vacuum leakage at the stack throttle plates so they would have to seal off very well, or problems with idle air control might be a problem.

additional enrichment to cover the "bog" when the stacks come in can be provided fairly easily.

so has anyone seen a system like this? ever built one? or worked with one?

not too concerned with perfect operation, just want something very out of the ordinary if you know what i mean.

    tag your it!!

The factory has their Shit together with their electronic injection.
I would get as many parts as I needed for a 502 factory fuel injection, and make it work that way.
The motor sizes are close enough that it will run good without any reprogramming or
    playing with nozzle sizes.

You can still make something that looks cool,
but you won't make anything that will run as well as the factory electronic injection
    under all conditions.

  3. thanks unk!!

agree'd the 502 setup would work well, but i just got a desire to do it myself.

to me there just isn't anything cooler than something one does for himself, even if it don't work perfectly, or for that matter is a bit finicky.

i guess i am just weird that way.

    anyone else?

When the swap meet rolls through town, the intake vendor has an early mechanical injector manifold, one of those with ball valves on the stacks, and one of the stacks is an old 97 carb. I thought of this too, but would put 2 carbs so each side gets fuel. Then for the brain box check out the one from aquamist for $300. My thought was then to just run jets on the stacks and a fuel line solenoid instead of spending $300 on injectors. A lot of people are selling megasquirts assembled for about the same money, though.

Not too long ago...OK, maybe about 15 years ago.... there was an outfit that built hybrid carburetor/injectors. They were for drag racing, but might be adaptable to your application.

On another note, if you are building the manifolding anyway, why not adapt something like a throttle body injector or three? This would of course take some electronics to work, but would be cool and possibly very effective. If you didn't have to pay too much for software, it could even be not too expensive.

Here's an ad for a similar idea from years ago.

    http://home.cogeco.ca/~scott-injection/ad004.jpg

It is a fuel injector that bolts on to a 3-bolt intake. For street use they suggested a carb in the centre of a tri-power intake with the injectors at each end plus a progressive linkage.

I like the Megasquirt box. Used one on a system not to long ago. Used a chevy throttle body for it. I'll be doing another for one of my nailheads when I get caught up..'
