The short story is that this 57 truck is owned by a buddy of mine. He planned on fixing it up as time permitted however, he was in a motorcycle accident a few weeks back and suddenly, this truck needs to get running right (he will be driving it daily as soon as his leg is working again) so I am helping him. I drove it to my house in order to re-wire it and to do some brake work. I parked it last night and, when I walked past it this morning, I got a very strong fuel oder next to the filler. I don't know if these trucks are supposed to have a sealed cap or, if neck corrosion is common. Can anyone help me with common problems in this area?
The cap should be vented otherwise you will create other issues. Does the fuel smell come from inside the cab or just outside, near the filler?
Outside for sure. I smelled it while walking past it this morning. I have no idea if the smell was inside because, my own sweat and the sweet, sweet smell of a burning clutch probably masked everything else. The truck had not run in several months so I was getting it to my house. It ran rough and I was having a VERY hard time finding 2nd gear (three speed column shift). So, that combined with a muggy South Florida evening.... Anyway, it is home now so I am going to do the wiring and brakes and then take it from there.
There is a hose that connects the fill pipe to the tank in the cab. there is also a hose from under the tank to a solid line going forward to the fuel pump and a hose from that solid line to the pump. Better not be makin' sparks with leaks around!
Check any hose clamps if any- from the tank to the filler pipe. The ones in my Chevy leaked a little (big smell) when I changed the tank.
