Heyo! Happy Monday Hambers. I have a technical question.

Short version, ton of rust in fuel lines. Replaced them all and tank/carb for safe measure. The fuel pump was cleaned and looks pretty solid but the Quick Fuel carb I got wants 6.5PSI. Easy enough with a regulator. However, my current pump is garbage. At first I thought it was the fuel pressure gauge but the second had the exact same reading. Question is on mechanical fuel pumps. Usually I’m pretty good at researching out answers on my own, this one is so conflicted I have no idea which way is up.

    What GPH is suitable?

It’s a mostly stock 302, bored a bit over with very mild cam, 450 Quick Fuel… it’s a Southern California cruiser. I’m more economy and reliability oriented. It’s on a 64 Falcon so it’s very light. I see everything from 115 to 25gph. I understand the basic principle of it which based on my driving says I should be good in the lower range. However will I be gaining anything by going a bit higher?

    thanks!!

The pressure rating you'll find for a carb is usually the maximum pressure, so you can use a lower pressure pump.

there is an advantage to using a higher flow pump if you're going racing, or plan on holding the carb wide open for a while. Which is why you have a V8 in there instead of a six, right? But the 25 gph pump will feed 250 hp, roughly, so anything over 40 or so is not going to be needed.

Awesome. Thank you. That’s what I figured. I’ve had it for nearly a year and its never been wide open for more than a second or two on the highway. I’m by the beach in Southern California so at $6.50 a gallon it’ll be awhile before that becomes an option for anymore than a second. Ha

just gotta get your priorities straight. I was earning minimum wage, part time, when the second gas crunch hit a little over 40 years ago. Yet I was out at the strip every weekend, and it was a long drive across town at 10 mpg to get there.
