Probably a stupid question, but is there/should there be an access panel for accessing the fuel sender from the trunk, or do you need to drop the tank to do this? There doesn't seem to be an access panel on mine, however it looks to me like there may have been one at one point that was sealed over with paint.

I didn't want to start cutting paint over possible seams if there is no door underneath the paint. :p

Yea, the PO covered over the trunk floor with what appears to be bed liner, so looks like I've got some seam cutting to do. :p

If anyone happens to have a photo by chance, especially of the screw location, that would be awesome.

if you cant get past the seams. just grab the trusty o'l cuttin' torch and get after it.:D

kust kidding!! don't do it! I jokeingly made that same suggestion to an aquaintance, and he actually did it in his honda. luckily, he just lost some hair, and had to buy some silver sulphadazine cream for the mild burns. took his chops about 2 weeks to grow back.

LOL, even if I had the inclination to use a cutting torch near the opening to my gas tank, I live in an apartment with a single car garage, I don't think management would be pleased. Especially afterwards. :)

Maybe this will help - it shows the approximate location of the access hole in the trunk floor. You should be able to feel the ribs or contours to locate it:

A friendly word of advice - the parts books can be an invaluable "tool" sometimes, especially during dis***embly/re***embly and may often save a lot of time.
Consider getting one if you plan on working on the '54; you'll likely make the cost of it back many times over just in time saved!

I think retrojim has 'em on disc - eh Jim?
