Hot Rod Company makes a nice T style tank that fits behind the seat in a coupe or Roadster. Looks traditional too.
I did a mustang tank with a bulkhead and top for a rear seat, but its still a work in progess.Mine is a sedan, but if I had a coupe I would do a 32 rear tank.
I think a 32 tank in an A looks so much better on a full fendered car. And they really look like factory on full fendered sedans. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I prefer not to have the gas tank over my lap in an 80 year old container, nor do I like all that gas acting as my rear bumper. My 16 gallon Tanks, rectangular tank is in the trunk area. Face it, there is no good place to put a fuel tank in a Model A, just some places less bad than others. What ever you do, get a roll-over vent installed.
I had never heard of a kit with frame extensions and a 32 tank. I like that idea. I just bought a 2 door sedan and that would work out great for my plans. If you are looking for a good cowl tank you might contact Burt's Model A in Denver. They have lots of parts and are super nice to deal with. modelastore.com
Love how you did this setup, and it shows a dedication to both function and form. I'm a firm believer in keeping the gas tank outside of the passenger compartment. There is a risk****ociated with driving a hot rod as it is, but the potential downside of being doused in gasoline and lit on fire is one I would try to mitigate at all costs. Sealing the trunk off with a rear firewall and using a fuel cell with a bladder is a real good start. Very nice work
Used a Ford pu tank . Fit nice . I changed the fill inlet and the hose it shows will be modified to a curve so I don’t have any blowback during filling . Mounting and such can be seen on tread below . Blue
How about a tank from a 47 Merc, mounted in the trunk ? Just cut the old filler neck off, pinch & weld the stump & relocate the remains of the filler neck to the opposite corner & if you want to fit a spare tire in the trunk, just hammer the leading edge in with a sledge... at least that's what the teenagers in the early 60's did for a fuel tank in my coupe... ha ha
Bump. Any more ideas for model A tanks? I'm working on a '30 sedan. Don't want to do a cowl tank. I like the '32 style rear tank idea. I also like the inside backseat area tank location, just don't know where to put the filler neck on that one (without a flap gas cap)
Yeah, but it's a Model A. Your only other options are saddle tanks or hanging out the back like a Deuce. Saddle tanks are ugly and also crash susceptible from any angle while the rear location makes a fuel tank your rear end protection . there is NO good, safe location for fuel in a Model A. Saddle tanks are A-ugly, B-$1200 a pair +sending units, C-have to fill from the top, D-can only be used in carbed situation, E-plastic?
I've been fighting this decision myself in my 31 tudor as I want to keep the back seat. I keep coming back to a 32 style out back though. The gas tank and battery are my 2 main design problems at this point. I chopped the top 3" and channeled the body 3" so backseat interior space is at a premium already. Got a bunch of grandkids so I definitely want the ability to take some of them with me. .
I have a chopped '28 Tudor sedan and made two rectangular 1.5"x1.5"x 1/8" angle frames to enclose the gas tank behind the rear seats. The tank is a 17 gal aluminum RCI #2171A. The filler neck goes through the driver's side sail-panel. I have two stock Tudor front seats in the back. They're only about 4" forward of the stock seat location, so there's plenty of legroom. Good point. I fabbed an 18 ga. steel "firewall" between the tank and back seats per NHRA specs. I'll add seam-sealer when finishing the interior. Hope this helps.
An old thread I know but I want to report I did the F1 tank like this and it fit like a glove. I will be reinstalling some kind of seat in there after I build a steel bulkhead skin over the tank. Thanks for the tip! Hamb to the rescue. I run a fenderless sedan and the idea of the tank hanging out back....like a diaper!
