Hey Guys, Im working on restoring a 67 ford Fairlane Ranchero with a inline 250 six. So been working on the body panels and drove it out to turn the car around to work on the other side and something broke in the steering. Right now Iv replaced all the upper and lower arms, inner and outer tie rods. Before the car had 3 inches of play in the steering now it has a full turn of play. It has a straight shaft no rag joint, and when you turn the steering wheel the shaft moves down and up like the worm gear is not moving the block gear in the box? As soon as theirs some resistance like when you turn it right until the steering digs in to the top column the wheel turns right and when the wheel is turn again to the left after the full turn you feel the wheel start to turn. Getting ready to take the box/shaft out and was wondering if any one has any insight.

Did you try to adjust the freeplay? Might get better.

Yes, it sounds like the bearing right above the worm gear has "lost it's balls" :) or got loose somehow. The worm gear shaft can't jump up and down if both bearings are OK

By the way...hint hint, I think you typed the WRONG year Ranchero because HAMB does not allow cars past 1965. So, hint hint, edit your year

a 67 Ranchero is definetely NOT a traditional car and as such it doesn't belong here...as much as I like 'em personally. Locked thread
