That's what happens when you buy from the wrong source, best to get a kit from @carbking here on the HAMB

Well, my carb rebuild was successful so far. I used some tricks from the Corvette site to set the initial adjustments. It fired right up and idled nicely. I backed it out and it idled well in gear. It accelerates smoothly with no hiccups. I didn’t drive it far because the gas gauge was on E and I don’t know at what point it runs out of gas. I’ll change the spark plugs next then do a serious tune up. Hopefully it will be a lot peppier with some TLC.
I wish I had done this a few weeks ago because this weekend is the nostalgia drags at old Kingdon Dragway in Lodi. It would be a great opportunity to make a few 1/4 mile p***es in a laid back local setting. Next chance isn’t until New Years.

I didn’t think he messed with Holley stuff!?! I sure would have got a kit from him. I thought an authentic Holley kit would be the next best thing. Luckily, I have boxes full of extra carb parts and gaskets.

The Fairlane I owned in HS with the 428SCJ , 4 speed , 3.70 gears was probably one of the ones I wish I had back the most . Sold it for $3500.00 when gas went from .35 to .69 . Working stiff could not afford to drive it anymore . I bought a smashed 69 Cobra , put the complete drive train , disc brakes , oil cooler , seats , all in my 67 . The body split , where rear windows met the 1/4 panel 3 x . Lots of torque on hand . I found the 69 Cobra , looked like it was rear ended by a train , purchased the complete wreck no ***le $175.00 , and tow it off today ! Fun memories . I don’t know how my parents slept at night knowing what I was driving balls out like a fool .

With the carburetor freshened up I decided to treat the old Ranchero to some spark plugs. Glad I did. The old ones show a little evidence of a slightly rich mixture…

I removed and installed several plugs the hard way, using the over-handed cross grip, closed eyes and biting my tongue. Then, I remembered the trick I used to use on my old Mustang, hose! It went much better, and I only nicked one knuckle. All the old horror stories about changing the plugs in big block Fairlanes, debunked.

I’ll have them out again after I get to drive it some. I want to know where I stand, Jet-wise. I still need to put some gas in the poor thing and put a few miles on it. The carburetor might be managing the fuel a little better now that there’s new gaskets and everything is tight.
