First ones I remember were mid-late 50s. But not FUZZY, sponge rubber with glued on dots..........OLDBEET
I took my mom and dad to a car show last summer. I go to a show or 2 a year with my dad, but in 46 years, mom never came along. As mom and I were checking out the hotrods, she asked me why I don't have dice hanging in any of my cars. I told her I thought they were tacky. She told me that when she was in high school (graduated in '57) all the gals knitted dice for their guys. She offered to knit some for me like she had made for dad. I turned her down on the offer and told her she had too many knitting projects already. I think it hurt her feelings a little. She said mom-made dice wouldn't be tacky.
I have heard about girls knitting 'fuzzy dice' for their guys before-sounds cool. Unfortunately, not many people would 'get it' if you had hand made ones hanging in your car. I don't think having some made by mom would be the issue, just trying to explain the history of handmande ones. If your dad made you a shift knob just like the one he made for his brother, you would run it right? Same thing with the dice.
you should feel bad because you turned your mother away from doing something nice for her son. She can make me a pair if she likes.
My wifes mom said she used to make all the dice for her boyfriends car club, back in the mid 50's. I have a pair of red ones that she made me for my Merc, but i'm not gonna put them in until it's done. I'll at least keep them in the car,in case I feel like hangin them.
Yep, my folks told me the same story, the gals made the dice for their fellows. My Dad actually ran, and still does, my Mom's graduation tossle from his rear view mirror. If it were me, I'd mention it to your Mom that you thought about it and have changed your mind and would she still consider making you a set. Then hang them and take her for a ride. Doesn't mean you actually have to have them hanging there all the time. Just maybe once in a while when you take your folks out for ice cream, a cruz night or something in your ride.
hey tomcat, see if your mom will make a set and see how much to ship it i wouldnt mind a set in my 47ply, ive heard that story too about girls making them for the guys in there cars.
It sounds lame, but I think the same thing. Not necessarily HOT, but at least a kool thing to do. I would have to let my mom knit me a pair of dice- just because it's something I don't think she'd do, and if she did it I'd be amazed.- she hates cars...
I'd hang a set of dice in my car for sure if they were made by my wife or daughter or grand daughter. Heck I bought a set of hand made dice at the Portland swap meet that some lady made and she was selling them there. Hanging dice is truely a 50's and 60's thing. Tacky??? I don't think so!
I HATE FUZZYDICE!!! WHEN AN ACCESSORY BECOMES SO CLICHE THAT PEOPLE ALL OVER AMERICA ARE ROCKING THEM IN THEIR '87 MUSTANGS, ITS TIME TO PICK A NEW ACCESSORY!!!!!! SOOOO many people belive that if they save a speciality vehicle of ANY SORT, that it calls for dice. That the dice possess the power to make anything 'classic' and 'classy' and/or comedic. Not only that, I think they are so goody, goody. We going to start wearing poodle skirts too? Can I change my name to the Fonz?
You guys are trying to trick me into hanging mom-made fuzzy dice from my mirror, so you can point and laugh. Aren't you? Denise, I was thinking of doing what you suggested after posting this a.m. Now, someone double dog dared me to lick the frozen flagpole at the schoolyard. So, I gotta go.
I'd kill for the set of dice my girlfriend made for me in 1961. My wife would kill me if I had them. If my mom were still here to make me a set I'd run them with pride. I still have my wifes tassel and mine on the mirror and they have been in every car since 1966. First dice I remember seeing was in my brother in laws 51 chevy in about 57 or 8. Wouldn't even consider running the***** they make today for 12.95.
That last line really made me sad. Ask her to knit the dice, it'll make her happy and I promise you'll be really glad you have them one day.
I would rather have "Fuzzy Dice" and explain them to someone (like grandkids) than having those rubber bull balls hanging under my car. Whats up with those anyway?
Some folks love 'em and some hate 'em, as for me, I think they are kool. What ever you think, they are period correct (from about the mid 5o's). As for tacky, don't forget that were talking teenage fads in the time when kitch was king!
I have some cheap fuzzy dice from eBay. Yeah, they're cliché, but I love them anyway. Going to a car show as a little kid, they were already cliché and they were everywhere, and I guess it's just something that stuck with me. I would love to have a handmade set, though, made by anyone.
Wow, I never knew about girls knitting dice for guys. I'd love to have my girlfriend make dice for me.
Now I gotta say that I dislike fuzzy dice more than most cliche 'period' items, I even lettered my Watson Scalloped '50 Olds Fastback "No Dice". I'd much rather have a shrunken head hanging from the mirror, and I don't have any of those either. The dice are the FIRST thing I remove when I get an old car with them. BUT - if my mother made them for me - I would hang 'em with pride, and F what anyone else said or thought. Moms are cool, and I cherish mine (she is 79), and anything she makes for me, my wife or my kids. Anyone have any of the original knitted type?? If you do, please give us pics and measurements. I will ask my Mom to make some for me, and hang 'em with pride on my Custom - yes that's Custom with a C!!! Tim
My mother is gone now, but I remember when we were kids she decided to take up knitting. She made us all slippers (4 boys) They were kinda like knit baggies with a hole in the middle. Didn't really matter which way you stuck em on your foot. I think if she would have knitted me a set of fuzzy dice they would have looked like those fake nut sacks people are hanging off the back of their trucks these days...except fuzzy with spots on em. Thanks for hanging up the knitting needles mom and giving sewing a shot ( a whole nother experience for us boys lol). We sure miss you...alot. =(
the balls came from truck drivers...i see them all the time on trucks that come into work. it's supposed to signify that their trucks have balls (lotsa power)...but i say any male who would hang a set of nuts off any vehicle is a little fruity.
