I like fuzzy dice, but then I'm old. It might have been a east coast think but I remember using a girls silk scarf hanging from the mirror in the mid 50's. I have a picture of my 41 Ford from the mid 50's with a scarf.
Stan Johnson from Milwaukee is the guy who first commercially marketed the fuzzy dice. He was also one of the members of the Mello-Tones car club that put on the January car show at the Milwaukee Auditorium back in the 50's. He is still a hot rodder at heart......he owns a cool red '27 lakes modified with a polished aluminum hood. He also road races a Datsun at Elkhart Lake in the vintage races!
I remember cuzzin Tony and a gal came by in his 57 ford in the late 50s. He had her pair of dice on the mirror, and painted on the fender ,"Pair O dice for Lovers"
I am not a fan of fuzzy dice either. My 27 year old son has had them in his 63 Impala SS 409 since he got it 9 years ago. I am not going to tell him I dont like them because its his pride and joy. It is a nice ride and I dont know where he got the idea they are cool in this day and age. I also think they look stupid on late model cars. I guess instead of being upset about it we should consider it the HIGHEST FORM OF FLATTERY to bygone coolness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So . . . what kind of accessories do you like for your car? And in fact, what kind of car are you running? Got pics? Lets see um....
Sponge rubber or purchased dice were looked down on back in the day. They fell into the same classification as fake portholes and other fake***** from Pep Boys and the like. Your girl friend knit the dice for you as a part of going steady just as you gave her your class ring to wear. A not so subtle sign for both sides of the gender gap that each of you was taken. A pic of my 50 Ford sedan circa December 1956. Across Main Street from Ventura High School in SoCal. Note that the base color for each die is different. Done that way, it only takes one color of each skein of yarn with enough left over for the mirror muff. Matching base color on the dice takes a total of two skeins and one more for the dots. 3" x 3" was the usual size, but somewhere in there some of the girls started knocking out 6" x 6". The girls didnt get too competitive, but the big dice were something else. No dice here, but hatred or not, perhaps itll fit the bad-ass definition for some. Circa October 2007. I have the patterns for dice knit back in the day. Not sure how they would work out scanned and posted, but if theres enough interest....
One could buy fuzzy dice in the mid-late 60's. I wanted some back then but never got any. Now I have them but don't have them in my ride, but I've got 'em! They sold them at Harris's truck stop on I-44 in Phillipsburg MO I know. Was my hang out! ..
this is a pretty cool thread actually... I had heard that fuzzy dice actually came from people that would hang baby shoes from their mirror. I guess it kind of makes sense now. from baby shoes... to knitted booties...to knitted fuzzy dice...to mass produced foam rubber dice you buy in a magazine...to cheesy nostalgia accessory.
If I had a daughter that wanted to see fuzzy dice hangin from my mirror you can bet your**** they'd be there and you can bet your**** I'd be proud of em! I'm sorry you just dont get it Camel City.. I'll bet your car is covered with uhhh... Skulls?
Momma Dice ??? You better go and tell her you changed your mind....one day ud be proud to look at those Dice
OK, all you young guys listen up, there were no "Fuzzy dice" when I was in hi school back in 1946-1950, but the "cool" thing then was to get your girl friend to knit you a pair of baby booties to hang from your mirror, also at that time, hanging your graduation "tassle" was "cool", I'm still married to that same girl friend from hi school days, for 58 years now, & like they used to say back then, "teenage marriages never last"!!----------I thought all the previous comments on the dice were very intresting-----Especially about the Mom's offering to make some for the grateful(???) kid!!!!!---------Don
As the "grateful(???) kid" at the beginning of this thread, I guess its time for an update. I did tell my Mom that I had been thinking about her very gracious offer to knit me some dice and decided that "mom-made" dice would be pretty cool. I asked if she would still be willing to make me a pair like she had made Dad in high school. She said she would give it a try, but it had been an awful long time since she'd made some. She seemed happy that I had changed my mind. No idea when they'll be done. But i'm sure they'll be made with love. Tomcat
I just came across this thread. I'm glad to read that you're having your mom make you the dice, believe me somday you'll really be glad you did. I just bought a '52 Dodge. The story I got from the seller was that he bought it from the original owner's daughter after he had died. The seller had it about 5 years and then decided to sell it because he needed the room (he has 2 barns full of cars). Anyway, these dice were hanging from the mirror (they don't look very new). I didn't ask but I doubt he put them there, doesn't seem like the fuzzy dice type. The only time I had dice hanging from the mirror was on my '39 Chevy sedan back in '76. Like many others I've gotten tired of seeing them hanging from PT Cruisers to golf carts. I asked my girlfriend whether we should keep 'em or not, stating that I thought they were a little tacky. She said we should keep 'em. After reading some of the replies on here I'm glad I did. I think they DO belong on '50's car. Like lake pipes and spotlights, at least they're period correct.
Ive had the fuzzy dice in my cars since High School. They are now in my garage getting dusty.Vermont doesnt allow anything to hang on the mirror. Just waiting for the cops and politicians to tell me that I cant piss ,so I can be saved from myself.Sick of aholes telling me what to do.I wish they would just all f**k off!
I never knew the story behind the fuzzy dice. Now that I do, I think it would be kinda cool to have a set made for me. I'm glad to read that you changed your mind and asked your mom to make them. You may have just made her day.
well, what iv heard was that they meant the guy had banged a chick in the car, and got a pair of dice for every fem he did in that car/
I've gotten a few requests for the pattern from back in the day. This is the pattern that was used when my high school girl friend made the pair shown in my 50 Ford sedan posted earlier in this thread.
Look close and you'll see a little knit purple bell hanging under the dash in my 32. My older daughter made it when she was in grammar school. I used to run it in my hot rod 63 Chevy half ton and moved it to the 32 when it was up and running.
C9....your the mang! My mom said she might be able to figure it out, but she lost interest after she couldn't get it quite right. I'm hoping the instructions will help.
You should be able to enlarge the pic to where the instructions are clear and easy, but the partially blacked out stitch pattern area may not come up clear. The original I have isn't all that clear, but if necessary I could post a bigger picture.
